The Strawberry Thief
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The candle appeared like no more than a firefly from the distance, but Mirabelle happened to know exactly where the cabin was from her bedroom window. She usually looked out into the tree line at night and wondered what creatures might be lurking in the shadows, beyond the safety of her family’s farm. But that night the glimmer of light caught her eye.

The Creature
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Upon seeing the flickering light from the window, the neighbor Jim would decide to investigate and catch the trespassers in the act thinking that it would be some stupid kids. The crunching sound of freshly laid snow would become a deafening noise the closer he got towards the cabin fearing he would be caught he would begin to drag his feet leaving a long trail from his cabin to his destination. The closer he would come the more his heart would race and a strange feeling that he should run the other way would come over him as going to the cabin was not a good idea to be having on this night. Each dragging step would begin to feel heavier than the last and what would normally feel like a ten-minute walk to this cabin would begin to feel like it was taking hours to arrive at all while the candle would flicker tauntingly in the window.

You
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. You decide to approach, because no matter how many horror movies you watch you never learn, do you? Curiosity has always won out over self-preservation in your mind; that’s why you were always the kid that stuck their hand in the blacked-out mystery box at educational exhibits. When presented with such a tempting thing as an abandoned cabin, how could you resist?

The Cabin In the Woods
The Cabin in the Woods By John Matthews The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was a dark cold snowy night in Michigan with temperatures below 40 degrees. A group of young teenagers, two young boys named Ray and Jason, along with a girl named Tina were out hiking. It was getting late and the teens needed to head back home. Then they saw the cabin all alone at top of hill with a light coming from it. The teens slowly climbed the hill with much exhaustion. Rob the oldest decided to knock on the door. He banged on the door with loud knocks that shook the house. There was dead silence. Tina said “maybe, we should leave it’s getting late.” Rob attempted again by knocking on the door and again there was silence. Tina, said “come on let’s go home. No one is here.” Rob then for third time banged really hard the icicles from the tree branches began to fall from the lonely Oak tree nearby. Finally, the door creaked opened slowly and standing in the doorway was a small petite woman who was hunched over with a cane. She had wrinkles rough as sandpaper squashed together and a large mole on her right cheek. The lady looked to be in her late 80’s or 90’s and was wearing a dark gray cloak and torn black sandals. She smiled, and said “Come in children.”

The Coal Miner's Daughter. Runner-Up in Campfire Ghost Story Challenge.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. And if one were to dare tip-toe across the rotten sprawl of decaying leaves and black dirt to peak over the windowsill, they may have seen a pair of naked, bony feet drag across the dusty, wooden floorboards to evade the candle’s glow. They may have seen a set of wild, gaping eyes slip into the dark edges of the cabin’s interior. They may have seen a shriveled, blackened hand silently close the trap door hidden in the floor from inside, only to disappear into the alcove below.

The circle
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Let’s cut to the chase here. Inside, there was a ghost. A spirit if you will. You know that already. The interesting thing here the what and the why. For this story, I want you to reach out and take my hand. You’re going to want to. I want you to. It’s dark beyond this circle of light. Here we are, like sitting ducks, bobbing in a little ring, while who knows what lurks in the depths beneath us. Which dark whorls are the swishing tail of something bigger and sleeker and faster than water? Which sudden cold creeping currents carry horrors and flailing limbs and gasping lungs and dwindling, dying, drowning light? The darkness behind your back is full of fear, don’t pretend it isn’t. The night is a time of dying and by morning the corpses are devoured. Just because you’re human doesn’t mean you won’t be taken. We are all just flesh and blood. Everyone serves a need here. That prickle in your spine is telling you something. The way your ears can hear so much more right now, that’s your brain, that raw, unevolved part of your brain, just trying to keep you safe. They always say listen to your gut. You know why? Because you know more than you want to, deep down. Keep facing inward, keep facing the light, don’t – no don’t – look behind, into the dark. Your body knows already what eyes might reflect the firelight from out there, in the dark. You’re gut feels already that you’re not so very safe. So let’s close the circle. Take my hand. Feel the press of our fingers against the bones and tendons and muscles of one another’s hands. Keep hold. Let’s go together.
