The Creature

By Stephen NagyPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Upon seeing the flickering light from the window, the neighbor Jim would decide to investigate and catch the trespassers in the act thinking that it would be some stupid kids. The crunching sound of freshly laid snow would become a deafening noise the closer he got towards the cabin fearing he would be caught he would begin to drag his feet leaving a long trail from his cabin to his destination. The closer he would come the more his heart would race and a strange feeling that he should run the other way would come over him as going to the cabin was not a good idea to be having on this night. Each dragging step would begin to feel heavier than the last and what would normally feel like a ten-minute walk to this cabin would begin to feel like it was taking hours to arrive at all while the candle would flicker tauntingly in the window.

When Jim finally got within a few feet of the window a strange shadow would slither along the walls of the cabin as it looked animal like in nature but at the same time it didn't. Holding his breath Jim would inch ever closer to the window, and what he saw would be the oddest thing he has ever witnessed in living memory. Inside would appear to be a hunched figure with what looked like it was wearing a bear's skin to ward off the cold wolf-like arms and cloven hooves. Fighting the urge to run he would force himself to look at the creature's face but the sight of the bleached white steer skull and black voids for eyes became too much as a primal scream echoed out from his mouth. Jim didn't know where the noise came from as it didn't sound like his normal voice as his body began to move on his own wanting to get back to his own cabin until the claw from the beast would rest on his shoulder and a sinister voice would call out. "Where do you think you are going? It is so cold outside do come inside and stay for dinner." Unable to free himself from the creature's grip he would find himself dragged inside the cabin as if he weighed little more than a child. Once the door was closed a foul stench would begin to fill Jim's nostrils as the smell of decaying meat filled the house. "What are you doing in this house?" Jim would ask the creature weakly as every fiber of his being was now screaming at him to run away and never look back at this cabin for the rest of his life. The beast however would let out a low guttural chuckle at the question that was just asked and would only respond in the same eerie voice. "Why to find shelter from the cold it is so very cold out although I never thought this place would have such wonderful room service." Before the confusion would fade away from Jim's mind the creature would sink his bleached white fangs into his throat and tear away his flesh the agonizing pain that would almost make him pass out as the metallic taste of his own blood would fill his mouth and ooze down the remaining part of his throat slowly drowning him with his own fluids.

The next morning the cops would arrive at the deserted cabin only to find the torn body of Jim and next to his body would be a still lit candle.
