"It Is Myself I Have Never Met..."
"It is myself I have never met whose face is pasted on the underside of my mind." I memorized this line seven years ago and I say it to myself almost every month when that familiar bout of "otherness" passes through. Sarah Kane, a remarkable British playwright, wrote this beautiful morsel of prose in 1999—the final line of her final play 4.48 Psychosis. She died by suicide soon after finishing it.

Shaped by the Sea. Top Story - June 2023.
I gaze down at the endless sea of shells that blanket the searing hot sand. Purple ones, striped ones, ones that are cracked into thousands of jagged pieces that pierce the bottom of my blistered feet. Thousands of beach-goers like myself will soon pulverize them into the sand upon which they lie. A fate much like our own, I suppose. Ground to dirt by newer generations, by the future. If you let it, the thought can be one of comfort. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. And if one were to dare tip-toe across the rotten sprawl of decaying leaves and black dirt to peak over the windowsill, they may have seen a pair of naked, bony feet drag across the dusty, wooden floorboards to evade the candle’s glow. They may have seen a set of wild, gaping eyes slip into the dark edges of the cabin’s interior. They may have seen a shriveled, blackened hand silently close the trap door hidden in the floor from inside, only to disappear into the alcove below.

I'm 27 as I write this, 19 when it happened. I composed this piece in an effort to help other women understand potential human trafficking tactics and/or potential kidnapping scenarios. I share this because while it happened nearly 10 years ago, it wasn't until this year (2021) that I realized the tremendous danger I could have found myself in had things ended differently.

Goodbye, C.. Top Story - January 2021.
“CG.” Her initials are tattooed on the left side of my back and sometimes, inexplicably, the tattoo raises like a welt and I can trace her script with my pointer finger. We got these tattoos two months before we graduated from college—a journey we shared together right from the start. You see, we were randomly paired up as roommates in 2011, our freshman year. Throughout those four years, we were known across campus for our immovable friendship. We were attached at the hip—we sobbed together when things got hard, we drunkenly danced at house parties we weren’t invited to, and we played hilarious pranks on each other that drove the rest of our dorm absolutely crazy. She was my person and the existence of one another had us believing in soulmates.
