Trump Condemns Deadly Russian Strikes on Kyiv: “I Am Not Happy”
Trump says he is 'not happy' with deadly Russian strikes on Kyiv
April 25, 2025 — Washington, D.C.
Previous U.S. Following Russia's deadly missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, which left at least 12 people dead and nearly 90 injured, President Donald Trump has expressed his strong disapproval. One of the deadliest attacks on the capital of Ukraine in nearly a year, the attack has sparked global outrage amid ongoing peace negotiations. Trump wrote, "Vladimir, STOP!" in a rare and direct rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin on his social media platform, Truth Social. In stark contrast to Trump's typically cautious or ambiguous stance toward Putin during his presidency and subsequent years, this public rebuke is a departure. The Dangerous Attack on Kiev The April 23rd attack on Kyiv was characterized by a barrage of missile and drone strikes that left residential buildings, hospitals, and key infrastructure damaged. Rescue teams worked throughout the night to pull survivors from the rubble, while the international community condemned the escalation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “another act of terrorism” and called for increased international support to defend against further aggression. NATO allies and European Union leaders quickly joined in denouncing the strikes, with many urging Russia to return to diplomatic channels.
Trump Sends a Clear Message to Break the Silence On Truth Social, Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner for the U.S. presidency in 2024, broke his silence with a pointed message. “What happened in Kyiv is a disgrace. Innocent people are being killed. Stop, Vladimir! he wrote.
Trump's remarks come at a crucial time, when peace talks are said to be moving forward behind closed doors. According to insiders, Russia had recently made tentative concessions, including scaling back its ambitions of complete Ukrainian territorial control—moves that some analysts interpreted as signals of potential de-escalation.
Peace talks and pressure from politicians Despite these early signs of diplomatic movement, Trump’s tone quickly shifted to a more critical posture—aimed not only at Russia but also at Ukraine. In subsequent remarks, he criticized President Zelensky for being “too rigid” on the issue of Crimea, the region annexed by Russia in 2014.
Trump stated, "He [Zelensky] needs to be realistic." “If Ukraine is not willing to compromise, the United States may not be able to support this peace process forever. We can’t be in a war that nobody wants to end.”
This statement has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with critics accusing Trump of downplaying the importance of Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law. In addition, Trump's backers argue that the "America First" strategy puts U.S. interests first and puts an immediate end to conflict. International Reaction
Globally, the response to Trump's message to Putin has been mixed. While European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the call for a ceasefire, many expressed concern over Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could pull out of negotiations.
At a press conference in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated, "We are encouraged by any message that leads to peace." However, we must remain united in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. Justice cannot be sacrificed for peace. Looking Ahead
It's likely that the next few weeks will be important. High-level meetings between U.S. and NATO officials are scheduled, and further talks with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are expected. Trump has indicated he may take a more active role in brokering a deal, especially if he wins the presidency again in 2024.
For now, the world watches closely as Kyiv mourns its dead, and political leaders navigate one of the most complex and dangerous geopolitical crises in recent memory.
