Introduction
Throughout human history, there have been numerous momentous changes that have fundamentally altered the ways with which we, as humans, live, think, and decipher the world around us. From the invent of fire to life-enabling medicines, these possibilities were not just advancements in science but revolutions that transformed the world, and our understanding of it as humans.
Some discoveries occurred by accident whilst others were the result of years of effort or pursuit of curiosity. In this article we will review 10 of the world's greatest discoveries of all time, about how these important discoveries occurred, with the understanding that a better world often starts with an idea, a bold experiment or just some good luck.
1. Fire
Fire is one of the earliest and most important discoveries in human history. It provided warmth, security, and a means to cook food in a healthy and sustainable way.
Historians believe our early ancestors made first discovered fire from natural events such as lightning strikes or volcanic eruption. Eventually early humans learned to create and control fire by striking stones or rubbing sticks together.
🔥 Why It Mattered: Fire gave humans the ability to migrate, manipulate tools, and build communities. Without fire civilization as we know it would not exist.
2. The Wheel
The wheel was invented in Mesopotamia in 3500 BCE, and is one of the major technological advancements in human history.nces. Interestingly, the first wheels that people developed were not used to transport goods, but as pottery wheels.
It was not long after the pottery wheel was invented that people discovered the wheeled vehicle and began using wheels to transport goods and people. This was a major milestone for trade, agriculture, and construction.
🔥 Why It Mattered: The wheel made travel easier, opened up connections through trade, and was the foundation for building stronger economies.
3.The Compass
Before the advent of GPS, explorers relied on the compass to guide them across ocean and unknown lands. The compass was, very first, invented in China in the 11th century was the first tool used by explorers that used the earth's magnetic field to show direction. The compass then gave sailors the ability to sail and travel on rare and new voyages, thus beginning the Age of Exploration - when new trade routes surfaced across the sea and new corners of the world connected.
🔥 Why It Mattered: The compass made global exploration possible and ushered us toward international trade used by travelers today.
4.The Printing Press
Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the 15th century and knowledge, in all its forms, began to reach a larger audience than ever before. Prior to this invention, books were copied by hand, making them rare and expensive. The printing press by Gutenberg then enabled a large number of books to be printed in a short period of time. The printing press then quickly spread education and literacy as an incredible unintended consequence.
🔥 Why It Mattered: The printing press helped to fuel and push the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution for the first time in human history. It was a discovery that upended the flow of information forever.
5. Electricity
Electricity is so important to our everyday lives, we literally can't picture our world without it! While humans have been familiar with static electricity for many centuries, it wasn't until the 1700s that we really began to understand electricity.
Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, and Michael Faraday made the initial discoveries that eventually opened the door to harnessing electricity. Later, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla helped introduce electricity to everyday life with electric lights and power systems.
🔥 Why It Matters: Electricity is what makes it possible for us to use our homes, hospitals, our phone communications and the internet, electricity literally powers everything important in our lives. It is the pulse of modern living!
6. The Theory of Gravity
When an apple (supposedly) dropped from a tree onto Sir Isaac Newton's head, it sparked one of the greatest and most significant discoveries in modern science — the theory of gravity. Newton realized the same force that was pulling the apple to the ground was the same force pulling the planets to each other and keeping them in orbit. His laws of motion and of gravity established the framework for science and centuries of pondering the cosmos.
🔥 Why It Matters: The discovery of gravity explained how the universe operates and laid the groundwork for modern day physics.
7. Penicillin
In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world's first true antibiotic, completely by accident. He discovered that a mold, Penicillium notatum, was killing the bacteria in his lab dishes.
This eventually led to the development of antibiotics and was a breakthrough for medicine, undoubtedly saving millions from serious and life-threatening infections!
🔥 Why it mattered: It launched modern medicine and continues to save lives all over the world.
8. The Internet
The Internet is one of the newest but also one of the most impactful discoveries in history. It started as ARPANET, a military project of the U.S. in the 1960s, and has transformed into a global network linking billions of people and sharing information.
Unlike many discoveries we have discussed, the internet was not a “single invention”, but the result of work from numerous scientists and engineers.
🔥 Why it mattered: The internet fundamentally changed the way we communicate, do business, learn and entertain ourselves, and created the digital world of today!
9. DNA and the Secret of Life
James Watson and Francis Crick discovered by the combination of Rosalind Franklin's X-ray images and model building effort in 1953, how all living things stored, passed on and explained the double-helix design of DNA. This discovery was the first of many anthropocentric biology discoveries ever
DNA clarified how genetic information was passed on from one generation to the next. It led the pathway of medical research, genetic engineering, and ultimately allowed some of us to solve a crime using DNA evidence from crime scenes.
🔥 Why It Mattered: There has been no other change in biology that has surpassed the discovery of DNA including in medicine, and changed how we viewed life itself.
10. Vaccines
The story of vaccines started in the late 18th century when Edward Jenner discovered that Cowpox could protect people from smallpox. Since then, vaccines have saved millions of lives from polio, measles, and most recently, COVID-19.
🔥 Why It is Important: Vaccines are arguably the most important health advancement ever discovered by humans, saving untold human suffering from epidemics, and possibly ensuring EVEN we have increased the life span of our species!
The Commonality: Curiosity and Tenacity
What do all these discoveries have in common? They occurred because of human curiosity and experimentation and obstinate persistence. Some were accidents (like penicillin) and some resulted from hard work and effort (like DNA; or electricity).
These stories are also a reminder that discoveries don’t just change science they change society, civilization and the human world view.
