Empowering India's News Ecosystem: A Year of Impact and Innovation

Over the past year, India’s news ecosystem has witnessed transformative growth, driven by technological advancements, policy reforms, and a surge in digital media consumption. Stakeholders from across the sector have worked to create a media landscape that is better informed, more inclusive, and more innovative by tackling misinformation and encouraging regional journalism. Key Achievements & Innovations

Combating Misinformation with Fact-Checking Initiatives

AI-powered tools and grassroots fact-checking networks have gained prominence, with platforms like BoomLive, Alt News, and Factly playing pivotal roles in debunking fake news.

Collaborations between tech giants (Google, Meta) and Indian fact-checkers have improved the speed and accuracy of misinformation detection.

Growth of Vernacular & Hyperlocal Journalism

Platforms like The News Minute, Mojo Story, and Village Square have increased the visibility of marginalized voices because there are now more than 500 million internet users who are consuming content in regional languages. AI-driven translation tools have made news more accessible, bridging language barriers.

Policy & Regulatory Advancements

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act (2023) and IT Amendment Rules have shaped responsible data practices while balancing press freedom.

Government initiatives like the PIB Fact Check Unit aim to curb fake news but have also sparked debates on censorship.

Rise of Independent & Crowdfunded Journalism

Outlets like The Wire, Newslaundry, and The Quint have leveraged reader-supported models, reducing reliance on ad revenue and corporate influence.

Rural women journalists run platforms like StorifyMe and Khabar Lahariya, which showcase grassroots reporting. AI & Tech-Driven Newsrooms

AI tools for automated reporting (e.g., PTI’s AI-based sports updates) and data journalism (e.g., IndiaSpend) have enhanced efficiency.

Podcasts, short news videos (Instagram/YouTube), and interactive formats are redefining engagement.

Challenges Ahead

Sustainability: Many digital startups struggle with monetization amid ad-driven models.

Press Freedom: Concerns remain over censorship, legal pressures, and journalist safety.

Deepfakes & AI Misuse: The rise of synthetic media poses new threats to credibility.

The Road Ahead

As India heads into elections and beyond, a collaborative approach—integrating tech, policy, and public awareness—will be crucial. Investments in media literacy, innovation grants for rural journalists, and ethical AI adoption can further strengthen the fourth pillar of democracy.

Conclusion: The past year has set the stage for a more dynamic and resilient news ecosystem in India. By embracing innovation while upholding journalistic integrity, the industry can continue to empower citizens with trustworthy, diverse, and impactful storytelling.

However, research has shown there is declining trust and engagement among users. Our objective has always been to identify and address the fundamental challenges facing the news industry, namely user growth and sustainability, in collaboration with news partners so that news media companies can better achieve their business objectives. We're proud of the significant impact of our scaled and in-depth work with Indian news publishers, spanning efforts to understand new user behaviors and revenue streams, programs that have driven modernization and substantial revenue increases, and collaborative initiatives like Shakti, which has established a robust framework for combating misinformation. And we continue to partner with news organisations through the Google News Showcase.

preventing false information In addition to driving performance, a critical focus has been combating misinformation, especially during key events like India's general elections. And so, this year, we supported Shakti, a consortium of news publishers and fact checkers in India, launched to combat misinformation. This initiative brought together over 50 news publishers and 300 journalists to debunk misinformation and deepfakes in 10 local languages, reaching a vast audience. In just three months, over 6,600 fact-checks were amplified, leading to a 180% surge in regional language fact-checks and a 92% increase in election-related fact-checks. Shakti made it possible for newsrooms to publish fact-checks 78% faster and facilitated the creation of over 67 new fact-checking desks by providing a collaborative platform for sharing alerts, research resources, and fact-checks. With over 1,700 journalists receiving specialized training, the Shakti program has now expanded to include 100 publishers across languages, formats and new topics and is covering state elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. Our support for award-winning news and information literacy programs—Sach Ke Saathi Seniors, FactShala, and others—provided capacity building and mentoring in over 100 cities this year, empowering a variety of groups, including youth and senior citizens, to develop critical thinking skills, identify misinformation, and locate reliable sources. This effort is complemented by our support for these programs.
