The Long Journey of Edan Alexander

Edan Alexander was born in Israel, in the city of Tel Aviv. But when he was a small boy, his family moved to the United States. He grew up in a quiet town called Tenafly in New Jersey. Edan was a kind and friendly boy. He loved playing sports, listening to music, and spending time with his family.

Even though he lived in the U.S., Edan never forgot where he came from. He felt a strong connection to Israel. When he finished high school in 2022, he made a brave decision. He chose to go back to Israel and join the army. He became a soldier in the Golani Brigade, one of the toughest units in the Israeli Defense Forces. He was called a "lone soldier" because his family lived far away, in America.

Edan trained hard and was proud to serve. He knew his job was important. He wanted to protect the people of Israel and help make the country safe. His parents were worried, but they were also very proud of him.

On the morning of October 7, 2023, something terrible happened. A group called Hamas attacked Israel. It was a surprise. Rockets were fired, and fighters crossed into Israeli towns near the Gaza border. Many people were hurt or killed. Edan was on duty near the border when the attack began.

During the chaos, Edan was captured. He was taken across the border into Gaza. His family did not hear from him. Days passed. Then weeks. Then months. It was a nightmare.

Edan’s parents hoped every day that he was alive. They talked to the media and government leaders. People around the world heard about Edan and the other hostages. His face was on posters, websites, and news channels. He became a symbol of strength and hope.

While the world watched, Edan was trapped in a small room. He was not treated well. For a long time, he was kept in a cage. His hands were tied. He had little food. He could not see the sun. But Edan stayed strong. He remembered his family. He believed he would be free one day.

Months passed. Then over a year. Still, Edan stayed alive. His heart was strong. He thought of his mother’s voice, his father’s smile, and the friends waiting for him back home.

Then one morning, everything changed.

It was May 12, 2025. Edan was told to get up. He was blindfolded and taken out of the room. He did not know what was happening. Soon, he was handed to the Red Cross. The soldiers told him he was going home.

News spread fast: Edan Alexander had been freed.

His parents cried with joy. They had waited 584 days. Now their son was finally safe.

When Edan crossed back into Israel, many people came to welcome him. There were hugs, tears, and cheers. Even people who had never met him felt happy and proud. Edan was not just one man—he was a symbol of hope, courage, and survival.

Doctors checked on him. He was thin and tired, but he was alive. He said he wanted to rest, eat good food, and see the sky. He also wanted to help the other hostages still trapped in Gaza. He knew how they felt. He wanted them to be free too.

People said Edan was a hero. But he said, “I just did what I had to do.”

His story reminded everyone of the power of hope. Even in dark times, we can stay strong. Even when things seem lost, we can still find our way home.
