1. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - 2019

What's the Story?

The movie, POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU, opens with a dramatic scene where a powerful Pokémon sets fire to a laboratory, leading to a fatal car accident in Ryme City. This city is unique because it is a place where humans and Pokémon coexist without the need for battles or trainers. The protagonist, Tim (played by Justice Smith), receives the news that his father, Harry, a celebrated police detective, died in the accident. He then travels to Ryme City to collect his father's belongings.

Upon arriving at his father's apartment, Tim discovers that Harry's Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), who was believed to be dead, is alive but suffering from amnesia. What's even more surprising is that Tim is the only one who can understand Pikachu, as everyone else only hears its iconic "Pika Pika" catchphrase. The duo also uncovers a vial of gas in Harry's apartment that can turn Pokémon into raging monsters.

As they delve deeper into the investigation, they team up with Lucy (played by Kathryn Newton), an aspiring journalist, to uncover the truth behind the accident and the gas. They embark on a quest to find Harry's sources in Ryme City, hoping to find answers and get to the bottom of the mystery.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog - 2020

In a remote planet, Sonic, a young blue hedgehog with supersonic speed, is attacked by an echidna tribe. His guardian, Longclaw, an owl, gives him a bag of warp rings that can open portals to other planets. She sends Sonic to Earth while she remains behind to hold off the echidnas.

Ten years later, Sonic lives secretly under the town of Green Hills, Montana. He admires the local sheriff Tom Wachowski and his wife Maddie, unaware they plan to move to San Francisco. One night, while playing baseball alone, Sonic triggers an electromagnetic pulse that causes a power outage across the Pacific Northwest. The U.S. Department of Defense hires the roboticist Dr. Robotnik to investigate the incident. Sonic decides to leave Earth, but Tom discovers him and agrees to help him. The two flee when confronted by Robotnik, who falsely accuses Tom of being a domestic terrorist.

As Robotnik pursues them, Sonic and Tom bond and fulfill Sonic's bucket list. Robotnik discovers that Sonic's quill has an immense amount of electrical energy and plans to capture him. In San Francisco, Maddie treats Sonic's injury, and Robotnik arrives to capture him. Sonic fights off Robotnik's drones, and Tom sends Maddie back to Green Hills using a Warp Ring. Sonic fights Robotnik across the world before Robotnik subdues him in Green Hills. Tom and the townsfolk help Sonic, and Tom acknowledges Sonic as his friend, causing Sonic to regain his power. Sonic destroys Robotnik's hovercraft and banishes him to a warp ring portal.

Tom and Maddie decide to let Sonic live with them, treating him as their son. The government erases all evidence of the incident, and Robotnik plans his revenge. In a mid-credits scene, Miles "Tails" Prower emerges from a ring portal, searching for Sonic.

3. Mortal Kombat - 2021

In the 17th century, the leader of the rival clan, Hanzo Hasashi, and his family are killed by assassins led by Bi-Han. Hanzo fights Bi-Han but is killed, and his soul is sent to the Netherrealm. Hanzo's surviving infant is taken to safety by Raiden, God of Thunder.

Fast forward to the year 2021, and Earthrealm has lost nine tournaments to Outworld in the "Mortal Kombat" series. If Earthrealm loses the next tournament, it will be conquered by Outworld. However, there is an ancient prophecy that the "blood of Hanzo Hasashi" will unite a new generation of Earthrealm champions to prevent Outworld's victory. Sorcerer Shang Tsung, who has overseen the last nine victories, sends his warriors to kill Earthrealm's champions identified by a dragon mark, before the next tournament begins.

One such champion, MMA fighter Cole Young, is attacked by Bi-Han, who now calls himself Sub-Zero, along with his family. Cole is saved by Special Forces Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs, who directs him to find Sonya Blade, his partner, to investigate Mortal Kombat's existence. Jax stays to battle Sub-Zero and loses his arms in the process.

Cole finds Sonya and they are attacked by Shang Tsung's assassin, Syzoth. Together with the help of Kano, a captive Australian mercenary, they defeat Syzoth and travel to Raiden's temple. There, they meet Earthrealm champions Liu Kang and Kung Lao, and Raiden is critical of the newcomers. Jax also joins them, rescued and fitted with a set of mechanical arms by Raiden. Raiden trains Cole and Kano to unlock their unique "Arcana" powers as dragon mark bearers.

In the midst of an argument, Kano awakens his arcana, the ability to shoot lasers from his right eye, while Cole is unable to do so. Raiden sends Cole back to his family, revealing that he is a descendant of Hasashi. Shang Tsung gathers his warriors, including Kano's former ally, Kabal, to attack the temple, and Jax awakens his arcana, granting him superhuman strength and upgraded arms. Meanwhile, the Youngs are attacked by Goro, and Cole rouses his arcana, giving him a suit of armor that can absorb energy from physical attacks and a set of tonfas. Cole kills Goro and helps repel the attack on the temple.

Sub-Zero abducts Cole's family, leading to a one-on-one fight where Cole is overpowered. However, Raiden gives him Hanzo's kunai, which still has Hanzo's blood on it, and Cole uses it to release Hanzo's vengeful specter, Scorpion. Recognizing Cole as his descendant, Scorpion helps him kill Sub-Zero and free his family. Raiden banishes Shang Tsung and declares his intention to train new warriors for the next tournament, assigning his current champions to recruit them. Cole leaves to search for Johnny Cage, a martial arts movie star in Los Angeles.

4. The Angry Birds Movie - 2016

Red, a short-tempered bird with jet-black eyebrows, has been shunned by his fellow birds on Bird Island since he was a hatchling. After he accidentally causes the premature hatching of another bird's egg, he is punished with anger management class, the island's highest penalty. Although Chuck and Bomb, two of his classmates, try to befriend him, Red avoids them.

One day, two green pigs, Leonard and Ross, arrive on Bird Island on a boat, claiming to be peaceful explorers bringing offerings of friendship. They introduce the birds to various gadgets, including a giant slingshot. However, Red is suspicious of their true motives and sneaks onto their boat. He discovers more pigs hidden below deck, contradicting Leonard's claim that he and Ross are alone. When he returns and shows everyone the other pigs, Leonard lies that he only wanted to test if Bird Island was safe for his simple-minded cousins.

Red remains suspicious of the pigs and enlists Chuck and Bomb to help him find Mighty Eagle, the missing protector of Bird Island who is the only bird capable of flight. They discover him on top of Eagle Mountain, but he has become an overweight slacker who has not flown for years. Red sees the pigs planting dynamite around the island and realizes that they plan to steal the birds' eggs while the birds are distracted by a party. Red tries to convince Mighty Eagle to help them, but he refuses. As a result, Red, Chuck, and Bomb race back to the island to warn the other birds and stop the pigs. Unfortunately, the pigs escape with the eggs and detonate the dynamite, destroying the village. The birds apologize to Red for not believing him, and he forgives them.

Under Red's leadership, the birds build a boat from the rubble and follow the pigs to Piggy Island. There, they discover the pigs living in a walled city ruled by King Leonard Mudbeard. Red deduces that the eggs are inside the castle at the center of the city and plans an attack using the pigs' giant slingshot. The birds launch themselves over the walls and into the city, with most of them missing the castle but destroying other buildings. Red, Chuck, and Bomb successfully enter the castle and find the eggs inside a net, which the pigs plan to lower into a giant pot to cook and eat. Mighty Eagle arrives to help Red's group retrieve the eggs, having had a change of heart.

Red battles Leonard for one egg, but he learns to control his anger and manages to retrieve it. As they fall into a room filled with dynamite, Leonard accidentally ignites the pigs' reserve of dynamite. The giant pot in which the pigs planned to cook the eggs collapses and falls on top of Red, but he and the egg he was holding are shielded by it. All the families, except for one, reunite with their eggs, and Red returns the Blues to their parents.

Mighty Eagle takes credit for saving the eggs, claiming that he only appeared lazy so that the birds could find faith in themselves. The other birds rebuild Red's house in the center of the village. The pigs survive their home's destruction, and Leonard plots a new plan.

5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - 2023

Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American brothers, decide to start their own plumbing business in Brooklyn, which receives criticism from their ex-employer, Spike, and their father, who believes that Mario is dragging Luigi down. While watching the news, Mario and Luigi spot a significant manhole leak and decide to fix it. During the repair, they are suddenly transported into different worlds after being sucked into a Warp Pipe.

Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he meets Princess Peach, who rules over the land. Meanwhile, Luigi lands in the Dark Lands, where the evil Koopa king Bowser reigns supreme. Bowser desires to marry Peach and will destroy the Mushroom Kingdom with a Super Star if she refuses. To pressure Mario into surrendering, Bowser imprisons Luigi. Mario teams up with Toad, who takes him to Peach. She agrees to form an alliance with the primate Kongs to resist Bowser, and Mario is eager to help.

However, before they can embark on their mission, Mario must first defeat Donkey Kong, King Cranky Kong's son, in a fight. Despite Donkey Kong's immense strength, Mario emerges victorious, thanks to his Cat Suit. Mario, Peach, Toad, and the Kongs use karts to drive back to the Mushroom Kingdom, but Bowser's army ambushes them on Rainbow Road. When the road is destroyed by a blue-shelled Koopa General, Mario and Donkey Kong plummet into the ocean and are presumed dead. Bowser captures the other Kongs, and Peach and Toad return to the Mushroom Kingdom, urging the citizens to evacuate.

Bowser arrives in his flying castle and proposes to Peach, who reluctantly agrees after Bowser's advisor, Kamek, tortures Toad. Mario and Donkey Kong, having survived by riding a rocket from Donkey Kong's kart after being eaten by a Maw-Ray, hurry to Bowser and Peach's wedding. At the reception, Bowser intends to execute all the prisoners in lava as an offering to Peach. Toad manages to smuggle an Ice Flower into Peach's bouquet, which she uses to freeze Bowser. Mario and Donkey Kong arrive and free the prisoners, with Mario using a Tanooki Suit to rescue Luigi.

As Bowser becomes enraged and summons a Bomber Bill to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario knocks it off course, and it explodes in the Warp Pipe, creating a vacuum that sucks Bowser's castle back to Brooklyn. The brothers defeat Bowser using the Super Star, which makes them invincible. Bowser is imprisoned and shrunk with a Mini Mushroom, while Mario and Luigi are celebrated as heroes in Brooklyn, including by their parents and Spike. The film concludes with the brothers living in the Mushroom Kingdom, working as plumbers and living in a house.
