A Filmmaker's Guide to: Joaquin Phoenix
In this chapter of ‘the filmmaker’s guide’ we’re actually going to be learning about literature and film together. I understand that many of you are sitting in university during difficult times and finding it increasingly hard to study and I understand that many of you who are not at university or not planning on it are possibly stuck of what to do, need a break or even need to catch up on learning film before you get to the next level. This guide will be brief but will also contain: new vocabulary, concepts and theories, films to watch and we will be exploring something taboo until now in the ‘filmmaker’s guide’ - academia (abyss opens). Each article will explore a different concept of film, philosophy, literature or bibliography/filmography etc. in order to give you something new to learn each time we see each other. You can use some of the words amongst family and friends to sound clever or you can get back to me (email in bio) and tell me how you’re doing. So, strap in and prepare for the filmmaker’s guide to film studies because it is going to be one wild ride.

NB Reviews: "Nomadland"
I'm a bit of a film buff, to say the least. Every year, I try to watch every single Academy Award for Best Picture nominee. Including the boring ones meant to try and get George Clooney or Glen Close a nomination. Especially those ones. And I found the nominees this year so interesting that I'd like to talk about each one of them. So, I'll be reviewing all 8 in the lead up to Oscar night. In order from worst to best (in my personal opinion).

Warrior
It’s tempting to herd all men into one group, assuming we all fit a few general stereotypes that describe what a man is supposed to be, do and have. And, while most men will likely not decry any such grouping (preferring stoic silence to sounding whiny), trust me – the words “man movie” do not describe every man’s ‘type’ when it comes to movies. Normally, however, a ‘good’ movie or television show will be seen as ‘good’ across a wide spectrum of both men and women. Television shows and movies that is universally regarded as ‘good’ will usually achieve the following:

I Care A Lot(2021)- Review
"Are you a lamb or a lion?" Most con movies are based on this simple principle of animals, eat or be eaten, showcasing the protagonist as a highly ambitious unempathetic person who will stop at no end to complete their con; to game the system, breaking rules and laws. While most of the general characteristics meet with the protagonist of I Care A Lot, Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike), but she does her grifts in line with the system and the laws. The scam is simple yet brilliant. Marla finds naïve elderly clients who have considerable assets and wealth. After spotting these potential clients, she convinces the court to grant her guardianship of these elderly people, on the grounds that they cannot function well by themselves. After being appointed their guardian she racks up money by utilizing their assets. The business is going well and Marla is enjoying life with her girlfriend and business partner Fran (Eiza Gonzalez). But the story gets less colorful when she ends up taking charge of a woman who seemed a simple catch but turned out to have dangerous connections.

Popcorn, Nachos
I am a person who likes to watch different genres of movies. It's funny now that I think about it because growing up the TV was not a huge presence in my memories at all, and what I do remember is that we had three channels. Of those channels I remember only being really interested in Saturday morning cartoons and Sunday evening 6 pm Disney movies.

What Makes a Great Biopic?
A biopic is a film which is about a historical/cultural/artistic figure that was important in some way, shape or form of moving the medium forwards. There has since been a biopic about everyone from Marie Curie all the way to Freddie Mercury and all through to Malcolm X, James Brown, Harriet Tubman, Al Capone, Elton John, Henry V and so many more. But what makes a biopic worth watching and what makes a biopic not worth watching? Is there a formula? Well, of course there is. There are actually five very easy steps in order to research and create your great biopic and I am going to share them with you.
