5 Hidden Horrors of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
In an unprecedented move, Marvel released three films in 2017, ending its run with Thor: Ragnarok. By now, everyone is aware of what a fun-fest Ragnarok is; in the hands of director Taika Waititi, jokes and gags take the place of broody rhetoric. The film effortlessly puts the ‘comic’ back in comic book adaptation, which has divided some fans due to the subject matter. Ragnarok is the Norse equivalent of the end of days and, irrespective of which era or version in Marvel comics history, has always been an epic and bloody changing of the guard.

Movie Review: 'Black Widow'
The legendary pop song American Pie has a small role to play in Black Widow. The song features early in the movie acting as comfort for a little girl who grows up to be Black Widow’s little sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). It reprises later in the movie as a reminder of a more innocent time in Yelena’s life. It’s a bit on the nose but I appreciated it nonetheless, an all time great pop song about America’s loss of innocence reflecting the loss of innocence for one of Marvel’s great heroes.

Classic Movie Review: 'Speed'
Speed is a near perfect action movie. Starring Keanu Reeves as Jack Traven, a member of the LAPD bomb squad, Speed crafts a nearly non-stop thrill ride while delivering characters we find easy to care about and root for. Co-starring with Reeves was Sandra Bullock in the role that would make her a superstar. Annie is a plucky every-woman and Bullock radiates star power and charisma in the role. Bullock is so good in Speed that she makes the previously wooden Reeves look like the movie star Hollywood claimed he was in 1994.

Why Titan A.E. is Still Awesome, 21 years on
So The Guardian has a surprisingly entertaining regular feature called Hear Me Out, where a writer attempts to defend a movie most people think is trash. They've done Confessions of a Shopaholic, Equilibrium, Deep Rising…and this week, they turned their gaze on a movie that is pretty near and dear to my heart. I'm talking, of course, about Titan A.E.

Movie Review: 'The God Commitee' The Heart is Just a Muscle
“You fail to remember that the heart is just a muscle.” I have to give Kelsey Grammer credit for being able to deliver that line above without breaking into a giggle fit. The context is that Grammer is portraying a world renowned heart surgeon who is demeaning another heart surgeon for getting too emotionally involved with her patients. Grammer is called upon to deliver lines like this one more than once in the new movie, The God Committee, a deeply flawed and earnest melodrama about a heart transplant.

Chungking Express: A Review
I was first introduced to Wong Kar-Wai through the film In the Mood for Love. Initially, I hated this film. I thought it dragged on, I was disinterested in the adulterous romance of the two main characters, on top of that was the repeating soundtrack. Hearing it over and over again, I nearly lost my mind.

Celina Saga
Precius held a worried look on her face. The clouds above her darkened. A bad omen drenched the skies. She could feel it. The princess of Celina rode to the thunderclaps of her horse', her younger sibling, Sybil Valentine wore a bandana atop her long, black hair like a gypsy. Her eyes reminiscent to what the sky once was when it was filled with radiance, now the sun had forsaken the Earth that once needed it. Her bosom covered with her thinly blue skirt and black leggings that led to her brown, buckled boots. She kept her arms wrapped around Precius' waist as she could feel the up and down rhythmic thump of the horse's motions. Corinne, Precius twin sister, kept pace beside them. They were ripping through a thicket to seek help--Sybil was infected. She mainly spoke slowly, but would feel as if the world weighed heavily upon her mind, causing it to wander. Sometimes, the thoughts were malicious. And even then, she only let out short groans, to which, Precius soon took notice.

Jurassic Park: A Review
Few pictures reach the legendary status of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. First opening to audiences in 1993, I can hardly imagine the giddiness the movie-goers had seeing dinosaurs captured in such detail and magnificence for the first time on the big screen in such a way. We all know the scene and shot as well. Just as our big three are introduced to the park's true nature, so is the audience. Paired with the swirling score of the masterful John Williams, it can only be described as pure cinema.

Why Is Nobody Talking About The Misogyny In Once Upon A Time In America?
Last night I sat down to watch what I thought was an essential cinema classic - Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In America. I was expecting a sweeping epic tale of romance, friendship, and betrayal. Minus the romance, the film half-heartedly delivers on those promises, with a score to match. In fact, Ennio Morricone's compositions are too idyllic and romantic for the film. The almost four-hour story fails to develop its characters, and no matter how alike the young/old acting counterparts may look, little harmony exists between the two sets of characters they play. An exception can be made for the protagonist, Noodles, who is a terrible person, but for reasons that remain unclear, the film wants us to sympathize with him.

Streaming Concierge
I've always loved movies. Growing up, movie theaters were my church. I worshipped at the altars of Lucas and Spielberg, Scorsese and Coppola, Altman and Ashby. As soon as I was old enough, I got my first job at Victor Video, an independent video store in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. From when I started at 15 until I left four years later, I used our vast library of VHS tapes to develop my own film school curriculum.

My Review of "Speed"
Speed came out in 1994 and at the time of its release I thought it was a dumb idea. It was pretty popular back in those times. I guess I didn't see the appeal so I never watched it. My small mind couldn't comprehend how this movie could be an exciting action film. Fast forward to 2021 I finally caved and watched the movie. After watching it, I have to admit I'm kicking myself for not watching it earlier.
