Review: "Black Widow"
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally re-arrived to movie theaters around the globe with the super spy thriller, Black Widow. Natasha Romanoff's solo outing comes at a weird time as fans already know when her time is up, robbing fans of any kind of worry of losing her over the course of this film. However, it does flesh her character out a bit more while introducing new characters and answers the age old question of what happened in Budapest. It has a similar feel to that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier but unlike that film it doesn't have the same stakes, Black Widow by comparison feels smaller and more focused on Natasha and her adoptive family. It is hard not to feel or think that this film took too long to happen but at it's core it is still a solid action film by it's own merit.

Has the Space Age Returned to Hollywood Once Again?
‘Space, the final frontier’ were iconic words spoken by Captain Kirk back in 1966, and still hold true today as human beings continue to look for life beyond Earth. The wonders and perils of space travel has always captured our imaginations, be it through the works of Jules Verne and HG Wells, the stories and mysteries surrounding the space race, or through the visual spectacle of cinema. Ever since Georges Méliès’ Le Voyage dans la Lune brought space exploration to life on celluloid, films and shows set in outer space have become crowd-pleasers.

Is Arab Cinema Poised to take Over the World?
It’s Oscars season once again. The nominees have been announced, debates are running rife over who was snubbed and who was undeserving of their nomination. But there’s probably no better time than now to look beyond the Hollywood monopoly over these awards and expand our horizons.

How ‘Aladdin’ Embraces Shakespearean Archetypes
I have been thinking about the ‘Aladdin’ remake ever since my sister dragged me to see it when it released this summer. I wasn’t expecting to like ‘Aladdin’—the film had seemingly been in production for over two years, and it had courted plenty of controversy on its way to the big screen. The cast were unfamiliar, and the reviews were already scathing. People were especially hung up on how Will Smith couldn’t replace the late, great, Robin Williams as the Genie.

3 Things "In the Mood for Love" Taught Me About Love
1 - It transcends material things and is not bound by human law I watched Wong Kar-Wai’s beloved Hong Kong film like seven times and now I know more about love than you do. Byron and Pushkin and Austen are all dead so you may as well listen to me, I have credentials. My credentials are that I understand one of the best movies about love ever and I read a bunch of philosophy and sh*t, so pay attention. In the Mood for Love is about two lovers who meet while they are both in failing marriages. Mr. Chow and Mrs. Su Chan, the two main characters in the film, are each being cheated on by their respective spouses. They realize the truth over the long months that their respective husband and wife are gone for work. Once Su and Chow understand why their spouses are both gone at the same time and to the same place, they consult each other. They want to know why they were not enough, so they reenact the courtship of their spouses to find understanding. They go on dates, order food for each other and play out flirtations. Gradually, they develop very real feelings for one another. It’s a beautiful movie and you should go watch it. But first, finish reading my spoiler-free wisdom.

The Biggest Flop of 2001
Look at any list of the biggest box office flops and you’ll find Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Considering its $137 million budget and $85 million box office, it’s easy to see why. Reviews ranged from mixed to negative, many praising its cutting-edge animation but also panning its bland story and boring characters.

Classic Movie Review: 'Bad Lieutenant'
Abel Ferrara is one of the most daring, fascinating, and unique voices in film. Though he’s made his fair share of duds in his nearly 50 years behind the camera, he’s also made some truly iconic movies. Ms. 45 was a recent revelation for me, a film about Me Too decades before Me Too became a movement demanding change in the way women are treated by men in our American society. Ms. 45 is, for me, a true classic but for most it is not a movie they’ve even heard of, let alone experienced.

"The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim": New Tolkien Anime Adaptation
Tolkien has such an extensive fan base. Some people have been avid readers for years, while more people fall in love with his world by the day through the film franchise that began twenty years ago. I still remember how excited I was to see The Fellowship of the Ring with my brothers when it first premiered. I have been just as enthusiastic for every adaption and every biopic that has come out since.
