Broker
The Broker represents peak independent cinema, it seemed to slip through the cracks of 2022. In a year that was filled with very loud movies, The Broker slips through with a beautiful story and delicate character work that is rare to see in a world of superheroes and spies.

Representation for Representations Sake
Something that has begun to change the scape of Hollywood is the push for representation. Both on the screen and behind the camera, on the small screen and the big screen more roles are being created for, portrayed by and written by marginalized groups. Allowing for a richer and more realistic reflection of the world around us. However some of these pushes for representation are simply bad…and they teach us that representation for representation's sake is not a good thing.

Ranking Films of 2022
Okay so 2022 ended up being an amazing year for movies, I’ve decided to rank them, now this list isn’t actually in any particular order. All movies with the same number rating are tied with each other. Most movies that got a half a point off because of rewatchability, that said you have to be in a very specific moon to rewatch those films and therefore they got a slightly lower ranking. Now for context the only films in history that I have ever given a 10/10 are the Lord of the Rings films (all of them), and The Princess Bride. Now all I think this list proves is that I need to raise my standards, which is really saying something because I am very specific and very judgy about my movies, so I am in fact going to be a little harsher going into 2023.

Bringing Mutants into the MCU
Disney/Marvel owns Fox once again and as soon as that deal went down many comic book fans knew that meant at some point that we would get to see the X-Men in the MCU at some point. Now I think the most realistic of us knew that it wouldn’t be for a while but as we wait there has been much speculation as to what version or makeup of the X-Men we might get. Though the most common and popular characters are what a lot of fans would hope for, characters like Wolverine and Professor X would be a mistake to bring into the MCU so soon. Phase 4 has heavily hinted at the existence of mutants and I think it's important to talk about which mutants would make the most sense in the MCU as we know it now.

Debunking the Trope That “Sunlight Is the Best Disinfectant”
There is this tiring trope that happens in media. The villain has been deceiving the populace of a town, country, or galaxy for the entire runtime. It seems like they will never face justice, but then our hero steps onto a stage with evidence or leaks a hot mic recording to the public, and the villain's secret gets revealed. The crowd instantly turns on them, and the day is saved.

Beyond the Special Effects: A Critical Review of James Cameron's Avatar
Avatar, directed by James Cameron and released in 2009, promised to be a game-changing film with its groundbreaking special effects and visually stunning world of Pandora. The film was highly anticipated and had a huge budget, yet it ultimately fell short in its storytelling. The plot was unoriginal and predictable, with shallow, unlikeable characters. The villains, too, were stereotypical and served to reinforce racial stereotypes.

Fairytale and Fantasy in 2022
2022 was another difficult year. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started the most brutal conflict in Europe for decades and fuelled a cost-of-living crisis in several countries previously reliant on Russian fuel. The climate crisis led to more erratic weather, including record-breaking heatwaves and blizzards. The socio-economic problems continued, with political divides generally becoming further entrenched, and strikes and protests becoming seen as an increasingly necessary response to problems that governments don’t have the ability or inclination to solve. There were also plenty of celebrity scandals – whilst some (such as Will Smith’s loss of temper at the Oscars) had an element of farce that balanced out the resulting outrage, others (such as Kanye West’s slide in Neo-Nazism and the ‘Depp Vs. Heard’ trial) were just soul-crushing. However, there were plenty of silver linings, with several populist right leaders suffering humiliation and scientists, campaigners, and other progressive reformers making a variety of breakthroughs. During the year, a variety of films, TV shows, plays and books provided much-needed escapism. During 2022, there were a wide range of fairytale and fantasy inspired works of varying degrees of quality. A common theme of the year in this subgenre was projects arriving on stage or screen after a long and difficult development process. But how many of them proved worth the wait?

From Dusk Till Dawn: Impact of a Legend
“From Robert Rodriguez…From Quentin Tarantino…” This tagline is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about one of my favorite movies ever, 1996’s From Dusk Till Dawn, directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino. I was scrolling through my social media and realized that yesterday, January 19th, marked the 27 year anniversary of From Dusk Till Dawn’s original release and I felt compelled to write an article commemorating the creativity and genius of this movie.

The Last of Us: Our Obsession With The End Won’t End
Twenty years have gone by since Cillian Murphy woke up in a devastated zombie filled London in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. We are treated to another spectacle of the end in the critically renowned The Last of Us. A show that cements the fact that the only thing left which separates television and film is the size of the screen. The Last of Us is truely impressive and fantastic to watch, but isn’t it a story we have heard many times before?
