Bringing Mutants into the MCU

Who and How

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Disney/Marvel owns Fox once again and as soon as that deal went down many comic book fans knew that meant at some point that we would get to see the X-Men in the MCU at some point. Now I think the most realistic of us knew that it wouldn’t be for a while but as we wait there has been much speculation as to what version or makeup of the X-Men we might get. Though the most common and popular characters are what a lot of fans would hope for, characters like Wolverine and Professor X would be a mistake to bring into the MCU so soon. Phase 4 has heavily hinted at the existence of mutants and I think it's important to talk about which mutants would make the most sense in the MCU as we know it now.

The most obvious one to me is Emma Frost, she’s led many of the X-Men spin off teams as well as being the headmistress at Professor Xavier’s school for mutants at one point, and she would be arguably the least intrusive and disruptive to the current state of the MCU. She also fills the role of a telepath without trying and once again failing to bring Jean Grey and the Phoenix back to the big screen. She also has no problem crossing moral lines and therefore could fit right in with the likes of the Thunderbolts, Loki, and Namor.

With the advancement of one Ms. Carol Danvers' addition of Rogue has crossed many fans' minds. Of course many want to see the storyline where Rogue drains Carol of her powers and though I do think that would actually play out well in the current state of the MCU, and give Carol an excellent chance for depth and growth, she has also had many run ins with the Skrull and therefore would fit right into the Secret Invasion storyline that has been set up. Also that Rogue/Carol storyline happened with a very young Rogue and Carol when she was still Ms. Marvel, though the effects of that storyline furthered both of their characters.

If we are going to bring Wanda back into the fold (which we of course are, she’s so not dead guys) Beast is the best way to build her into the villain they could use her as. He was one of the people (or mutants) to try and reverse the effects of M-Day and therefore would be a great opposition to her coming into her power. That said, as much as I want them to build Wanda into a villain, if I have to watch one more mediocre man make her go through the same damn arc I am going to scream, and riot. She deserves better than what the MCU has done to her and if we are going to build her back up she needs to be written by exclusively women and she needs to die and then be resurrected (we can parlay this right into Hellfire Gala and the Trial of Magneto).

Now unless we have another time jump the introduction of Storm is going to have to wait. Obviously everyone wants her storylines in Wakanda with T’Challa, which we can now have because of the introduction of his son (so suck it people who said they should recast Chadwick). But when it's time Storm is going to be an incredible addition to the MCU.

Now ultimately I think that the best way to really introduce the mutants into the MCU is through What If? As in What If the X-Men existed during Civil War? Or Endgame? That way we get a taste of it before they are centered in their own stories.
