The perspective that writer and director Ryan Coogler recently shared about the production of his upcoming period action horror film Sinners has fans more eager than ever for its release. In addition to a more thorough examination of the 1930s setting, the second trailer for Sinners offered some fresh details regarding the overall plot direction, the other factors at work, and Hailee Steinfeld's role. The film centers on twin brothers, both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, who return to their hometown only to discover it teeming with various forms of evil.

Although the film's details have been gradually revealed over the past few months, the trailer offered the most comprehensive preview to date. Coogler gave even more information in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about what viewers can anticipate, as well as how the film was made and where the idea for it came from. Although the supernatural vampire plot will still be covered in glorious and gory detail that may turn off weak-stomached viewers, Coogler's update made it apparent that Sinners is about much more than that.

"Genre-Fluid" is how Sinners will be described.

In addition to vampires, Coogler gave additional details about the other archetypes that will appear in the film during a virtual press conference. Given that Sinners is set in the South during the Jim Crow Era, Coogler is able to draw on a unique cultural imprint. Based on his interview, it appears that the story will incorporate many of these ideas, which lessens the film's distinction as a horror film even though it contains some scary elements. As Coogler pointed out:

"The film is very genre fluid,” Coogler said. “It switches in and out of a lot of different genres. Yes vampires are an element, but it’s not the only supernatural element in the movie. The film is about more than just that.

Coogler pointed out that the film was an examination of American music, particularly as it relates to the culture and roots of blues music in the Deep South, in addition to other supernatural elements (such as the long-theorized magical bond between twins). Given the wide range of components that go into the main plot, it appears likely that Sinners will be more of an immersive cultural experience than a straightforward horror tale.

The film holds a significant personal stake for Ryan Coogler.

Sinners will be the most intimate film Coogler has ever made, according to him. In the previously mentioned interview, Coogler described how his grandparents were raised in the same setting as the film and how he spoke with his 100-year-old grandmother as part of his research into his family's past. Given how deeply his personal history is woven into Sinners, he thought about turning it into a therapeutic experience.

“I’m blessed to have found this medium that I can work out deep philosophical and existential questions that I may be struggling with while contributing to an art form that means so much to my family,” Coogler said. “Each film brings me closer to understanding myself and the world around me.”

Ryan Coogler has been praised for his ability to bring attention to underrepresented or underrepresented cultures and individuals ever since the release of his critically acclaimed debut film Fruitvale Station. It is obvious that he will be doing the same with Sinners, which is a detailed analysis of the South's beauty and evil during the Jim Crow Era. Expectations of Coogler's work in Sinners are understandably high given his personal investment in the environment and history of the film.

Christopher Nolan Assists Coogler During Filming

The distinctive way Sinners was filmed is another fascinating detail that Coogler disclosed. According to Coogler, he used 65mm film because it has a larger surface area than other filming media and gives the pictures a higher-definition appearance and feel. Although it was the norm decades ago, it lost popularity in the 1980s and 2000s before making a comeback thanks to the use of Imax and high-definition cameras. Coogler received advice on how to shoot large-format photography from Christopher Nolan himself, which is about as good of help as it gets.

Imax photography and Ultra Panavision lenses, which change the aspect ratio, will work in tandem with that large-format film type to give the film an immersive quality. All of that ought to contribute to the setting's vividness on screen, making Sinners a genuinely singular cinematic experience deserving of a theater showing. Sinners looks to be another huge hit, continuing Ryan Coogler's string of critically and commercially successful films.
