Report: James McAvoy Will Not Return to Play Charles Xavier in New Mutants—Will He Be an Ex-Professor Soon?
It had been rumored that James McAvoy would bridge the films in the role of Professor Charles Xavier, but it turns out that's false.

Other than the casting of Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, not much is known about X-Men: The New Mutants, Fox's upcoming X-Men spinoff featuring a younger team of students. It had been rumored that James McAvoy would bridge the films in the role of Professor Charles Xavier, but — according to Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter — that rumor is false. Kit posted a tweet revealing this tidbit:

In addition to debunking the rumor of McAvoy returning as Xavier for New Mutants, Kit appeared to clear up another casting rumor: Nat Wolff will not be playing Cannonball.

Rumors of Wolff playing Canonball were just that, rumors, so this news isn't too surprising. It's James McAvoy's absence that's more of a concern. McAvoy is signed on to return for #DarkPhoenix, which would be the last X-Men movie left on his contract, so does McAvoy's absence from New Mutants mean he hasn't renegotiated a deal for more movies?
