My Review of "What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1"

This show is bonkers but in a great sort of way. I didn't expect to get into it so much.

What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 came out back in 2019. I started this season a while back but never really finished it for some reason. It's really weird because I actually like this show but yet somehow I didn't finish up the first season in one sitting. Luckily, I got around to finishing this season up and I wasn't disappointed.

This season is pretty much an introduction to our main characters in the series. We have Laszlo who is married to Nadja, they both happen to be vampires. In the same house, we have Nandor, who is also a vampire. Nandor has a human servant by the name of Guillermo. Guillermo is usually the one front and center throughout the show. He has aspirations of becoming a vampire. Then there's Colin Robinson who almost steals the scene every time he's in it. Colin is a vampire but he sucks people's energy instead of their blood.

The group of them all live in one house and they're the worst people possible because they're immortal and they are all powerful. Despite this fact, they are all somewhat incompetent in some way or another. This is where all the comedy comes in. Guillermo is usually the one cleaning up the messes left behind by these vampires. These vampires treat him like crap in return.

Each episode has a story that explains their backstory and their relationship with one another. There are the odd episodes that get into weird kinky sexual antics. Actually there's a lot of that. Due to their overconfidence in themselves they're liberated to do whatever they want. It's kind of funny how over the top they are and frankly ridiculous. No normal person would think this way because we normally have social norms to hold us back. These people don't really have that filter because they know they can kill anyone on a whim and not care.

It's a lot to absorb sometimes and that could be the reason why I had such a long break between sessions. Watching these terrible individuals do these things to everyone can be quite overwhelming sometimes. It's sort of like watching Seinfeld back to back. Though it can be fun, there's only so much you can take in one sitting before you get kind of nauseous of them.

Still it's not too bad of a watch because each episode is only 30 minutes long and there are only 10 episodes in this first season. It's kind of a breeze to go through but again it does take a lot out of you if you're not used to this type of humor. It's also difficult for some people to get into the supernatural element of this show. I was fine with it. It actually adds a little extra fun into the whole mix. At least they're consistent with the world and the abilities of the characters. There's no weird power or situation that gets them out of situations. For the most part they follow all of the tropes we know about vampires and play with our understanding of them.

I love how this show kind of subverts our expectations with some of the story elements in each episode. You know they're going to go wacky but they pull the rug from you sometimes with something in the episode. It's really fun and all of the characters are great. I really liked each of them.

Overall, this is a really fun show to watch. Again, you kind of have to be in the right mindset to get into this, at least for me. When you're in it, it's a really fun ride though. I have to give this season a 7.5 out of 10.
