My Review of "The Cutting Edge"

It may be old but this movie is stuffed with charm. I really liked it.

The Cutting Edge is a romantic comedy that came out back in 1992. Though this movie is over three decades old there's something to say about the leads in this movie. They are utterly charming and kept me glued to the movie to see what happens next. Movies are definitely not made like this anymore. In fact, I think this is such a cult classic that I believe the movie Blades of Glory is almost a one for one satire of this movie.

The movie starts off innocently enough with an Olympic hockey player by the name of Doug Dorsey and an Olympic figure skater by the name of Kate Moseley. They don't know each other but they both competed in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Both of them also had unfortunate mishaps that prevented them from achieving success at those Olympics.

Later down the line, the two are still striving for their dreams of success. The problem with Doug is he has a condition that prevents him from playing competitive hockey again. Kate on the other hand, is having problems finding the perfect pairs skating partner. Through a series of odd circumstances Doug is brought to Kate as a new skating partner.

The whole movie is about the two becoming a team and attempting to win the gold medal at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. There are tons of hijinks throughout this movie as the two come from opposite ends of life. Doug is a rough, while Kate is elegant and refined.

You're going to have to understand back in the 90s you could get away with these huge plot holes. It just gets the movie going by ignoring them and being ignorant to this fact. The movie is also a product of its time. We have very old methods of film making. I'm not sure if this is because of budgetary issues or if they were movie making methods back in the day that have gotten better over the years.

This movie now sort of looks like something an amateur film maker could make on YouTube. Some will have a hard time watching through this because of how dated the filming techniques are in this movie. I found that it wasn't too hard after a while. You sort of get used to it.

This doesn't negate the fact that this is a pretty well crafted movie. I think what really shines here is the dialogue and the lead actors. Each of the cast brings a lot of fun and life into their characters. Their reactions, especially Kate's are genuinely hilarious and so much fun.

I also liked how they wrote the dialogue in this movie. Though it may seem cheesy they don't write like this anymore. Even the rough around the edges, Doug, doesn't swear in this movie but the dialogue that comes off of him is clever. It almost feels like a step almost to the dialogue of really old movies. You'll have to experience this to know what I mean because there's a sense of innocence throughout the movie that comes from the dialogue. That's pretty difficult to do when you consider they're talking about sleeping with others and other raunchy things.

There's also elements of the times back then. There are jokes about Doug getting into figure skating from hockey. He's from a pretty macho background so it's difficult for him to admit. I think this was done pretty tastefully and even today it works pretty well where they don't harp on it too long but get the point across.

Overall, I had a really good time with this movie. A much better time than I had thought I would have. There's so much fun and laughter in this movie that I can't recommend this movie enough. Yes, the movie will feel quite dated and some of the filming techniques will not to be to certain people's tastes but you really have to give this one a try. I have to give this one an 8 out of 10.
