My Review of "Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior"

By no means a great movie, there are some things to take away from this well meaning movie.

Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior came out back in 2006. It was a made for TV movie and it definitely shows. It's also quite dated as you can tell from some of the fashion and filming techniques. If you ever give this a chance, you have to watch it knowing that it is a made for TV movie. That means the production is low and the acting will not be that great. Still, there is some dumb fun to be had with this one.

The movie starts off in China to explain the mystique behind the whole Chinese background of the story. We have a monk by the name of Shen that has trained his whole life to protect the world from a mysterious evil being. Time has come for the being to reappear so Shen has been tasked to find a mythical warrior. She's been reincarnated to Wendy Wu in California. His job is to protect her at all cost while teaching her how to recall her past skills and knowledge.

It's a fairly straightforward story. Keep it simple because this is totally aimed at a kids audience. Meanwhile in California Wendy is oblivious of her situation. All she wants to do is become the homecoming queen of her school. She's trying to do anything to get the votes of her fellow students but she's got an arch nemesis Jessica. Other than that, she's living a typical teenager life of the early 2000s.

When Shen and Wendy finally meet we have that fish out of water situation. It's fun and quirky but they also have the aspect that Wendy and her family don't know their cultural background. I thought this was a pretty cool aspect of the movie. Shen brings some interest and excitement of their Chinese heritage. It's relatable because there are a lot of North American families that don't know their cultural background anymore. I thought this movie was a pretty cool way of telling kids that it's okay to ask about your culture. They show the real social norms that push people away from exploring their roots. We're all busy with our lives and it seems redundant to explore these issues. This movie kind of shows that maybe it isn't.

I like how they used the teachers to help out Wendy in her learning process and some of the training is entertaining as well. Though the fight scenes are good, you can see the fact that the stunt doubles do not look anything like the actors that they're trying to portray. That was a little funny to see. It's totally obvious that Wendy's stunt double is a man in a dress at times.

There are many early 2000s tropes like the love interests and the good versus evil storylines. The acting here is pretty bad at times. It makes for some interesting viewing as jokes are delivered by wooden actors. In some ways it works but in others it doesn't. This is kind of a blast from the past though. It's a time capsule that I was okay to explore. Though there were some boring sequences as well.

Overall, this is definitely not a good movie but it isn't entirely without some benefits. There is a good message behind this story. There is some charm in certain actors in this movie. Not all of the acting is great but it's not expected to be Oscar worthy for a made for TV film. Again, that's why I mentioned you have to watch this movie knowing this. It's a time capsule that kind of has nostalgia for me. That's why I have to give this movie a 5 out of 10. I don't totally recommend this to anyone but it is interesting to explore.
