My Review of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie"

I didn't have expectations for this movie but it has no right being this good.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie had come out sometime in the spring of 2023. It took me this long to watch this movie. Honestly, I didn't have big expectations for this movie especially being from the people that make the Minions movies. What I experienced was just utter happiness packed into a nice little package.

The movie starts out with in Brooklyn New York. There two brothers, Mario and Luigi, who happen to be plumbers are making their attempt for the American dream. The two spend their life savings a quit their jobs to have their own plumbing business. No one seems to believe in them except for their loving mother.

To be fair the commercial they made is very corny but in a fun kind of way. Unfortunately for them their business isn't off to the best of starts. They have a little bad luck everywhere they go.

One fateful day there's a disastrous sewer problem in New York. Mario believes this is a chance for the two to make a big name for themselves. They plan on saving New York and build their business from there. Through a series of unfortunate events they get magically transported to a different universe. Even worse the brothers get separated. Luigi gets lost in some spooky world whereas Mario gets stuck in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Now it's up to Mario to try to find and rescue Luigi. He can't do it alone though. He teams up with the Mushroom Kingdom's princess named Peach and a plucky mushroom named Toad. To make matters more difficult they're under a tight time constraint as an evil turtle named Bowser is on his way to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.

Their crazy adventure really start from there and boy is it colorful and fun. The visuals are a marvel to behold. You can't stop but stare at some of the surroundings while things are going on. This is especially the case if you've been a fan of the video game this is based off of.

You can tell that the makers of this movie did their research. There are tons of references to all of the Mario franchised games. All of these references are met with meticulous detail that fans would never expect. With technology today you kind of forget how far into details they can get. You can even see the fabric of the character's clothing, it's nuts!

Not only are the visuals amazing but the audio is a feast for your ears. Especially if you're nostalgic for some of the old game music. They've remixed certain songs that is keeping in the energy and fun of the original games. All of this is melded quite nicely to the overall movie package.

The voice acting is also pretty on point. Usually when they have celebrity guest voices you just see the celebrities when you hear the voices. Yes that does happen occasionally with this movie but for the most part they landed well with the characters. One of my biggest worries with animated movies especially with big name characters is who is going to be shining? The character in the movie or the actor that is playing them.

It's a very simple storyline that will be pleasing to the whole family. One of my biggest surprises was how they melded all of the Mario video game franchises into one comprehensive movie. I mean they added everything. I thought they'd just focus on 2 or 3 genres but they added so much to this that I was quite impressed.

Overall, it's all about how much fun I had with this movie and I can say I had a grand old time. I think most people will as well and it shows with how successful this movie has become. Mario is such a pop icon but they made this movie with enough love and respect that everyone will appreciate it. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It is one of the biggest surprises for me this year. I didn't expect to like this movie that much.
