My Review of "The Sopranos: Season 5"
This is definitely the beginning to the end. How does this series keep getting better?

The Sopranos: Season 5 is one hell of a season. It's really too bad I started watching this series so late because I think I would have enjoyed it even more had I watched it during the time it was first released. There's so many elements in this show that feel like a time capsule. I know I would have really liked it had I watched it when it was fresh and new.
This season starts off coming up right after the events of season 4. We all knew Ralphie had to go and well his demise had a huge impact on the series. His many crazy antics had created a ton of entanglement that Tony had to figure out how to clean up.
Of course Tony isn't a saint himself. He's his own worst enemy and all of the misbehavior and uncontrollable urges have come to bite him in the butt. His wife Carmella had finally had enough and in this season we finally see the outcome of the separation. It's a doozy but it's filled with tons of tension and a roller-coaster of emotions.
Meanwhile the kids are finding themselves. Meadow's new boyfriend finally gets a glimpse into the mobster family. This season really gives him a glimpse and it's pretty fun seeing his reactions. They're totally relatable, I think I would have reacted the same way as him.
AJ is starting to become even more like his father. It's kind of eerie how he is evolving into his father. He was aptly named because he is really starting to fit the bill.
One of the biggest storylines in this season has to deal with Adriana. Last season she was picked up by the FBI to become an informant. This season takes her stress levels to the next level. The sheer amount of chaos that revolved around her while she had to figure out how to spin it to the FBI was insane. I can't imagine the amount of stress I would go if I had to do what she had to do. Her unconditional loyalty is also unbelievable. People would crack at half the things that had happened to her. This season we're stuck guessing if she's going to continue to be loyal or finally break.
Then there's two new mobsters that finally get out of prison. They make a big impact on this season. I guess it's kind of a replacement for Ralphie because he was so insane in the last few seasons. He's a tough act to follow but somehow the writers of this series were able to give these two a good backstory. Each of them have tight bonds to Tony especially Tony B. They have a pretty interesting relationship. The more that gets unfolded throughout the season the more we have sympathy for the two Tony's.
It kind of made me reflect on certain milestone situations in my life and wondered what would have happened had one detail had changed. These are some of the questions that Tony had to ponder throughout this season. He has to figure out how to deal with the guilt and shame that he had brought upon himself. Unfortunately for him one of his biggest character flaws is his pride. Throughout each of the seasons he keeps getting himself into trouble because of his pride. This season it all comes around where he has to really reflect on his actions.
As I mentioned before I wished I would have seen this series when it first came out. Watching it now in 2021 I already know how many seasons there are and back then you didn't. There's an air of mystery that isn't there anymore because I know it's wrapping up. The way that they wrote this season was as if Tony had reached his peak power and everything is coming crashing down around him. Had I not known that it's the second last season I would have assumed that Tony is going to get himself out of the crazy mess he constantly gets himself into. Sadly knowing that it will wrap up in the next season I can kind of tell what they're going for.
Still this season was highly entertaining. There were a few episodes that had me questioning my own existential questions. What are some of my motivators and what critical moments had changed me to the person I am today. Each character is in crisis and now that we've already seen them at the height of their happiness we're starting to see the downfall. I'm embracing their potential downfalls and it's kind of sad to see especially since I now feel like I have a connection to these characters after 5 seasons.
Overall, I thought this was a really well written season. This show definitely had me feeling all sorts of emotions. I can't wait to get into the final season to see how it all ends up. Honestly, I hope they end on a happy note but I know they're the bad guys so it might not be so simple. I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. If you've gotten this far into the series you're probably like me salivating over the possibilities with the final season.
