My Review of "Pig"

I thought this was going to be a revenge movie but it turned out to be more than that.

Pig was quietly released in 2021 with a little buzz to it. I originally thought this was going to be a John Wick like movie because the movie Nobody came out around the same time. It just seemed to be a growing genre as there were multiple badass revenge movies popping up at the time. When I finally saw this movie I was a little shocked and intrigued at the same time.

The movie starts off with a man named Rob in the great outdoors. He's living off the land with his pet pig. It already seems a little weird but you notice that the pig is actually searching for truffles in the forest with him. I guess you still have to make a living even if you're living off the grid. The scenario seems kind of familiar already.

Pretty soon it's revealed that he sells these pricey truffles to this slick young guy named Amir. This guy kind of oozes douchebag all over him. He even offers Rob a cell phone in case something should happen to him in the wilderness. Apparently Amir is the only person that visits Rob. Already I had alarm bells ringing thinking that this is going to be pretty predictable. Yes there are elements of predictability but they do have a few twists in between.

It's obviously established that Rob is emotionally attached to his pig and well, one night two thieves break into his cabin. They beat Rob over the head to knock him down and they take Rob's precious pig.

Realizing he doesn't really have anyone to call for help he ventures off into the city. He then calls Amir to help him find his pet pig. I can't really spoil anything else about the movie other than that. It kind of ruins the fun of all of the reveals for you but that's basically what it's about.

Surprisingly there is not as much violence in this movie as I had thought. This movie dives deeper into the nature of humans as a whole. Our motivations and goals all stem from something in the past. Everyone deals with great loss in their own ways. Absolutely every major character in this movie has some sort of tragedy that has changed them to who they are now.

Building each of the characters in the manner that they did was engaging and kept me invested in the movie. I also loved the fact that all of the characters are somehow intertwined with one another. There are some wacky situations here and there but for the most part it works.

I did have some small gripes about the movie but none of these gripes really detracted me from enjoying the movie. Well one of them was a bit distracting and that was the camera shake of the movie. I don't know why they shook the camera so much on some of the scenes. It really wasn't called for and was very distracting especially since they were mostly stationary talking scenes. I know this is a big trend with a lot of filmmakers but it only works in certain scenarios. You should be jostling the camera so much that it detracts from what's actually happening in the scene.

Closer to the end there was this moment that I found was a bit overly dramatic. It was weird because the tone of the whole movie was really well done except for this one moment that was a little big distracting and took me away from the overall experience. The scene was a pretty significant scene but luckily this didn't happen too often in the movie.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty enjoyable movie. It made me reflect about life a little bit more. The movie also shocked me because it wasn't really your run of the mill action revenge movie that I was expecting it to be. I think you'll be pretty surprised at how entertaining this movie is if you watch it. With that said I'll have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. A one time viewing event but a very enjoyable viewing.
