My Review of "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear"

Nowhere as great as the original but there are a few laughs along the way.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear came out back in 1991. After the amazing first movie there was a lot riding on this sequel. If you've seen the first movie you probably have some expectations for this second outing. Unfortunately it kind of falls flat but it does have its moments.

The movie takes place a few years after the first movie. Frank and Jane had broken up as Jane had left him at the alter. Now Jane has a new evil villain lover. I found that quite entertaining that she's constantly attracted to these villainous individuals. She's still the old Jane that we knew from the previous movie though.

This time around the subject matter is the world's energy. Environmental issues have suddenly arisen and the old energy sources, oil, coal and nuclear don't like it. There's a conspiracy for the government to give these energy companies subsidies rather than clean energy like solar. The tycoons of those old industries plan to continue this trend by sabotaging a key note event.

First of all this plot point is still crazy relevant to today. This is 30 years later and we're still seeing these issues and it's crazy how this is still a topic. For a zany comedy I thought this was kind of wacky how they were so on point for their main subject matter.

We still have all of the crazy hijinx that Frank gets himself into. I found that this movie focused more on sexual exploits than the first movie. There were a few of them in the first movie but this one really focuses the attention to a lot of its jokes on sex. It was more direct than the last movie. I love the subtlety of the previous movie.

There is also a lot more potty humor that kind of felt like they were just going for low hanging fruit. They should have put themselves into funnier situations where a mundane or regular situation can become wildly unexpected like they did in the first.

You still do have other jokes in here as well and again there are a few that'll hit you without you knowing. Special attention has to be paid throughout the movie. There are tons of gags going on in the background and foreground that you might just miss.

We have all of the returning main characters from the first movie. This time Nordberg plays a bigger role but he's still a Charlie Brown for disasters. Not a lot of people are going to like the fact that his character is played by the infamous O.J. Simpson. They didn't know back in those times what he was about to do in the future.

If you like comedies of yesteryears you'll like this one though. The facial expressions for each of the characters is like a masterclass in overreactions. Not often do you see actors crossing their eyes when they die or get seriously hurt.

The humor is still there but if you have expectations from the first don't expect to have as great of a time. Still this is a type of humor you can't really find today. Well at least done well. This does an adequate job but is really lacking.

I also think that some of the jokes are a product of its time. Many viewers today won't understand some of the cameos and guest appearances by people like Mel Tormé or Robert Goulet. There are older movies that they spoofed off of that people will not really have a reference for.

Overall, I still had an okay experience but a lot of it was quite unmemorable. It's a nice diversion if you're seriously craving a comedy but don't expect a masterpiece. There are a chuckle here and there but no real belly aching laughs like the original. That's why I unfortunately have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. It's an excuse to see the gang together doing their usual hijinx.
