My Review of "The Equalizer 3"

You know it has to be good for Denzel to do a third movie. He never does sequels!

The Equalizer 3 is said to be 2023's last summer blockbuster action movie. It's hard to believe that it was even going to come out since Denzel Washington never does sequels. That's why the second movie was such a shock. That one turned out to be great. I love the Equalizer movie franchise and was excited when I heard this movie was coming out.

This movie starts off with a very gory scene. Note that this is probably the most gruesome violent of the movie series. They really went all out with this one. I thought it was going to be one of those movies that starts off from the beginning and then does a flashback from an earlier time. Not this time, this whole sequence is to set up the whole movie.

Robert McCall again goes on one of his vigilante acts that starts up a huge commotion. He creates a scene of unspeakable carnage and in this demon-like destruction Robert somehow slips up. He didn't account for something that almost results in his death.

Luckily for him a police officer finds him on the streets and takes him in for help. His life is miraculously saved by a village doctor. Over the course of time he befriends everyone in the village and in turn they accept him as their own. Yes this sounds like the basic premise of the other two movies but if it works then why mess with it?

Well there's a mafia gang that starts to bully the village for money and well you don't mess with Robert's friends or else you're going to get a big hurt on you. At each moment they pushed his friends in the small village I would see Robert eyeing them. I was shacking my finger at the villains. You can't do that! You're going to die!

Just like in the other two movies, Robert gives them an out. He tells the antagonists to leave his friends alone or else they won't like what's coming. Of course with these bad guys having such egos they don't think much of Robert. They continue doing it anyways and boy the violence that ensues is the chef's kiss. I was really rooting and hollering every time Robert would enact justice with these hoodlums.

My only complaint was that they didn't have a big enough gang for Robert to dispatch. I was hoping to see more innovative ways Robert was going to sneak up and dispose of his enemies one by one. There's something this movie does that makes it so satisfying to see how these bullies go down.

I guess it helps that they really develop the characters and relationships that Robert has built with his new village friends. We identify these villagers as our own family and friends. I guess I kind of had that fantasy of protecting my friends and family whenever they've been wronged. So there's the relatability that comes with this movie.

Some might not like how much time they used in the runtime to develop these relationships but trust me it's warranted. It really makes everything much more impactful when you see Robert doing his work. I mean at one scene it sometimes feels like a reverse horror movie when our protagonist is the monster and the gangsters are the teenagers being hunted down.

Overall, I had a load of fun in this movie. It has many elements where I wanted to scream at the screen in a good way. I got totally absorbed and that's how you know it was well made. This movie also looks stunning with its visual style. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's best watched with a group of rowdy people. You'll have the time of your lives.
