My Review of "Paddington in Peru"

This is one of the best family films to come out recently.

Paddington in Peru is the third movie of the Paddington series and it's still as sharp as the two previous movies. I had a few reservations about this movie when they announced it. It didn't seem as though this movie franchise would have legs to keep going. I've been proven wrong with the previous movie and this movie has proven me wrong again.

The movie starts out with Paddington when he was a wee cub. He of course is chasing after an orange when all of a sudden the branch breaks off. Paddington then falls into the running river only to be saved by Aunt Lucy. They've always wondered where Paddington came from but simply continued on with life not knowing. Well this movie is about to reveal the whole history.

That portion of the movie is a clever way to recap Paddington's origins for the audience. Those of us that haven't seen the other movies or have forgotten the story will be updated and won't be out of the loop. It's been several years since the last movie and we see the children have grown up.

It's a bit of adjustment for the whole family because they seem to be losing touch with one another. They used to be quite close with each other but with the kids finishing school they all have their own lives.

The catalyst of the movie comes in when Paddington gets a mysterious message from a nun in Peru. She works for the home for retired bears, which happens to be where Aunt Lucy is staying at. In the letter, she informs Paddington that Aunt Lucy is in bad shape. She really misses Paddington.

Paddington, being the loving bear that he is decides to go visit his Aunt Lucy. Along for the ride of course is his adoptive British family the Browns. On their adventure, we start to realize that things aren't quite what they seem and there is yet another mystery to unfold.

I love that all of the characters are still as loveable as they were in the previous movies. They have a British charm that I couldn't help but admire. Each one of them are quite courteous despite the indispositions they fall into. There's an air of innocence and naivety that help play on the fun and comedy throughout this movie.

That's not to say this movie isn't self aware. There are jokes flying at you a mile a minute but you can miss them quite easily. If you're familiar with the cast, you'll notice some jokes play upon some of their previous movie roles and insinuations about them.

One particular joke which caught me off guard was the fact that they were stuck in the rain forest. The son wanted to chill out and the father replied back to him that they were in the Amazon this isn't a shopping mall. Simple quick witted jokes like this are everywhere. The culmination of all those jokes is a very fun time.

It's kind of a shame that not a lot of people are aware of this movie or the franchise. This really is a gem of a franchise. I think it is one of the best family friendly series out there that everyone should check out. They are so fun and full of joy that you can't help but fall in love with.

Overall, you can probably tell this movie swept me from under my feet. I couldn't help but have a smile on my face from start to finish. It's so silly and amusing that I could forgive how absurd it is. I wholeheartedly recommend this movie and will be checking it out on multiple occasions. This deserves an 8.5 out of 10.
