My Review of "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw"

A mindless action movie yes, but it's a fun mindless action movie.

I needed something that I could just shut my brain off and enjoy and I noticed that Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw was available for streaming. This movie has been out for quite a while and honestly I had no desire to watch this movie in the first place. I haven't seen anything by the Fast & Furious since Furious 7. That movie wasn't really a have to see movie for me either. I'm definitely in the minority but Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift was my favorite of the whole series only because it's the one focused on racing.

Still I decided to take the plunge and saw this movie and I have to say I wasn't terribly disappointed. In fact, I kind of enjoyed it. The only character I kind of remembered was Hobbes since Shaw made a bigger presence in Fate of the Furious which I haven't seen yet. Still they made this movie so far detached from the Fast and the Furious series that you don't need to know everyone's backstories.

This movie is basically about the families of Hobbes and Shaw. It's also quite apparent that Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson had a huge influence in the making of the movie. I believe they were the producers of this movie so maybe this had a factor to this.

It starts out with this mysterious woman infecting herself with some virus and takes off. Meanwhile there's this villain called Brixton that has been given orders to get the virus so he's hot on her tail.

The Americans get Hobbes to help out the case and the British get Shaw to help out. The two of them hate each other and you just know that the two will be best friends forever by the end of the movie. It'll be a lesson in teamwork and family. Hmm sounds like pretty much every Fast and Furious movie. I guess that's what the connection is.

I know what I'm getting myself into so I can't groan or complain. I just went with it and you know what it wasn't that bad. Everything you expect from this movie happened. There were wildly ridiculous car chases, extremely over-exaggerated fight scenes and corny dialogue.

The first half of the movie is just Hobbes and Shaw making fun of each other with insult after insult. It got old pretty fast but I know the demographic that they're going after and I can see how it would be amusing to them. There are maybe one or two jokes that I chuckled to.

The over the top fights and driving sequences will not disappoint. They are fun and put a twist on common cliche fights and driving sequences. Some of the stunts were admittedly very impressive. They put a lot of work into these scenes and it really shows.

The special effects for the most part are seamless but there are a few moments where it looks pretty fake. I was surprised because it's a pretty big budget movie. Usually big blockbuster movies like this has really good special effects but there are certain scenery that looks really odd or fake.

Overall, it's everything that I thought it would be so I was left satisfied by the very end. It's an extremely good movie but it's something you can enjoy if you know what you're getting yourself into. I do like watching movies like this every so often and it satisfied my appetite. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. For what it is, it was a little better than what I was expecting and I would say it was more fun watching this than a few of the Fast and Furious movies.
