My Review of "F1: The Movie"

I liked that they dumbed down the sport so shlubs like me can understand. I had a great time with this one.

F1: The Movie is a very fun Hollywood take on making a movie about Formula 1 racing. There are so many elements of Formula 1 that they could have taken but they took a conventional aspect and it works. It's probably everything that we expect from a movie like this and that's not a bad thing.

The movie starts off with a little bit of a flashback. There seems to be a crash but awakened is Sonny, the race car driver. He's pretty much a guy's guy. Even though he's been part of a horrific crash he's able to bounce back to racing. It's not at the upper echelon that he used to drive at. He's pretty much racing whatever he can. It's a romanticization of the hardcore driver. Sonny's motivation is not money but more the love of driving. He also happens to be a savant at driving. He's able to adapt to whatever vehicle that he's given and drive the crap out of it.

After Sonny helps a Porsche team win their race he's approached by an old friend, Ruben. Ruben used to be a racer as well but he's somehow become the big boss of a startup F1 racing team. His racing team is unfortunately struggling. They're about to be stripped of their status because they can't seem to win any races. Ruben had the idea of hiring Sonny to help the team out and develop their up and coming driver, Joshua.

Of course Sonny takes the job, but this comes with a lot of heavy baggage. Sonny has shady history and many doubt him because of how old he is. Even worse, Joshua, isn't exactly keen on anyone stealing any of his limelight. This is going to be an uphill battle for Sonny but he's all into the racing so he doesn't care.

There's a lot of fun things that they do in this movie that is understandable to even lament viewers like me. I was worried that I'd be lost in all the lingo that comes with Formula 1. Yes, there were some moments that had me lost as I don't know all of the rules involved. They made it accessible for regular people like me and you to understand what's going on.

Certain tricks that Sonny does helps enamor us to his character. He's almost like a Happy Gilmore of F1 at times. They don't have the best equipment in this team but they do with what they got and adding Sonny's experience shows dividends.

The racing scenes are quite wild and can be dizzying at times. I imagine if I saw this in the theatres this would have been a greater experience. The sound and the visuals are part of what really make this movie pop.

Though, the cast does a great job in building our interest in these characters. There's a certain charm to them that makes you want to be their friends. That's part of the fun with this movie as well. I think the combination of the spectacle, the inviting faces and the cunning strategies all brew in a perfect pot.

It's also happens to be a big budget Hollywood movie so you expect some feel good moments in there as well. There are quite a few feel good moments in this Cinderella story of a movie and they are all executed quite well.

Overall, I had a great time with his movie. I'm glad that they dumbed down the jargon and rules involved with F1 for dummies like myself would understand it. This is pure fun and a lot of feel good moments for a good time for all. I have to give it an 8 out of 10. I would definitely recommend this to others and have another viewing.
