My Review of "The Accountant 2"
This is a fun little sequel that we never expected.

The Accountant 2 has come out and I don't think I really expected to ever come out. I think it's because it's almost been 10 years since the original movie came out. It wasn't crazy popular but I did like it when I saw it. At the time it did feel like there could be a sequel to this but after waiting close to 10 years you never think it's going to happen. After so much time has passed we don't really remember too much of the events that happened in the previous movie. Still I was happy that they made this sequel.
The movie starts off with a bit of a chaotic incident. I vaguely remember a character named Ray that helped Chris in the first movie. He is unceremoniously killed in the opening scenes of the movie. This sets off a chain of events that basically pulls Chris back into the story. Ray was looking for something and knew what he was getting himself into. Of course, he was dealing with some unsavory characters and paid the price.
We now have a character named Medina to take over the case. She quickly discovers that there's a secret organization which Chris is the head of. Through a series of secret dialogue she gets Chris to come out in the open and help her. This is unfortunately a big job so Chris asks his younger brother Braxton to help out with the case. It really isn't a bigger job, I think he just asked because he wants to bond with his brother.
The brother dynamic really takes over in this movie. It's pretty much what makes this movie a much more entertaining show. I thought the dynamic between Medina, Chris and Braxton work well. It's sort of like a Star Trek trio where you have Freud's id, super ego and ego. Chris is the analytical one, Braxton is the hothead looking for action while Medina is the sensible in between.
They have the character dynamics right and it works really well but I don't think that the mystery was quite as good as the first. It would go on swerves and try to make you think of going on wild goose chases. There is a feeling that they were going along with it as they were making the movie. No big huge plan or anything. It's more of a background thing to the overall emphasis of the character dynamics.
The action was done really well and quite brutal. I thought they did a heck of a job in the choreography of the whole thing and it was a lot of fun. Action fans should be pretty happy with what they provide here with action. They also do a good job in making our heroes look like badasses throughout this movie. I think that's a major thing that pushes this movie up a little past average.
If you liked the first movie, I think there's elements of that movie that were lost on this one. This emphasizes more about the relationships and action than the analytical thinking of the first. They used newer technologies to help them figure things out and it's kind of a weird cheat in my opinion. It makes sense since Chris is wealthy and really smart but it doesn't give much of a challenge to them.
Overall, I still had a good time watching this movie. It is very different from the first movie but I kind of understand why they went this direction. If you're a fan of the first movie you might be put off at the change in direction. It still feels like it belongs to the franchise but it's quite different. I have to give this one a 6.5 out of 10. It is worth a watch.
