My Review of "Everything Everywhere All at Once"
This movie will take you on a trip you never thought you wanted to go on.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of my most hotly anticipated movies of 2022. Today I got to watch it and for the most part I was not disappointed. It's a very high concept movie that is somehow made into a coherent digestible understanding. I don't know how they did it but the feat is miraculous.
The movie starts off with our main character Evelyn. She lives like the everyday person struggling in life. She's in a troubled marriage, issues with her father's approval, troubles with her taxes and even worse her daughter is slowly drifting away from her. You can easily see how stressed she is and how much she is taking on in her everyday life.
Then all of a sudden going up the elevator at the IRS building her husband, Waymond, suddenly changes demeanor. He warns of her of great danger and tells her that she's going to have to tap into multiverses in order to defeat a major villain. Obviously this is a lot to take for Evelyn since she's already going through so much stress.
Eventually Waymond's alter ego's premonitions start to show its ugly head. Destruction and chaos starts to happen while in the IRS building. This is where Evelyn learns about this new adventure and the world around it. Unfortunately this is a bit of a lull point in the movie despite the amazing and beautiful action scenes. The whole explanation of the multiverse and how everything works is necessary however it can make your head spin a little.
Once the world is established it becomes very crazy whimsical and chaotic. That is in the best way possible. The imagination and creativity that goes into each of the scenarios has to be commended. At certain times I was thinking about how high the creators had to be in order to think up of such a wild and anarchic world. It's both haunting and inviting at the same time. You want to live in each of these worlds just to see what it's like. It's a great representation of what Evelyn must be going through while she's experiencing her multidimensional selves.
This movie is also very culturally Chinese. I recognize a lot of the familial cultural issues that Evelyn is going through as she tries to gain acceptance of her dad or even tries to show love to her daughter. The spousal neglect is also quite on the button as well. Even still this movie is quite relatable to everyone.
They choose Evelyn because she's remarkably unremarkable. We're all in those situations where we wonder what would have happened had we made a different life changing choice. Still we're all kind of better because of all the mistakes that we made in the past as well. It's an interesting question to ponder and you'll probably be pondering this after you watch this movie as well.
Somehow they talk about a whole slew of existential questions throughout the movie without feeling out of place. It's a difficult thing to put so many ideas here and still have a coherent and entertaining movie.
Ultimately, it's a movie about Evelyn finding herself. She has to discover herself before fixing the relationships she has in her life. We can't help the relationships around us without ensuring that we're okay with ourselves.
I can see how this movie could have been influenced by the pandemic. The characters in this movie are all based on thoughts we have had during the isolation that we were under in the last 2 years. We all started questioning ourselves about our relationships, our careers and our lives in general. This movie is able to talk about all of our doubts and discouragements to say we're not alone. We have so much to look forward to. It's really quite emotional when you see how this movie plays itself out.
Overall, this is one of the most thought provoking and wackiest movies I've seen in a long time. Going into this movie you're going to have to keep your mind open. There is a ton to absorb and I understand it's not for everyone. It definitely was a movie that totally enjoyed. I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. It is a movie that I will be recommending to others but not everyone. There is a bit of a lull in the beginning but boy oh boy are in in for a ride if you can get past that first portion!
