My Review of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves"

This movie reminded me of when I watched the original Ant-Man movie for the first time.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the latest blockbuster to come out in 2023. It certainly feels like movies in the theatres are back to what they were before. This movie is a ton of fun and in all the right places. Though there's a sense of familiarity about it, I could say that was part of the charm of this movie.

The movie starts off with a captured Edgin. He's the main character of the movie and we're wondering why he's in prison. At the moment he's on some sort of parole board meeting and trying to plead for his release. One of the members of the board seems to be late and he's stalling for that member to arrive.

In the meantime he tells his backstory to kill some time. At the same time he tells the backstory of his friend Holga who is arrested with him. Basically Holga and him have been working together as thieves for a long time and were given one last big gig. This gig was to steal a magic relic that would be able to revive Edgin's murdered wife.

Little did they know, this was all a ruse and they were patsies for the crime. Meanwhile their underhanded friend, Forge, gets away with their loot and adopts Edgin's child as his own. Obviously Edgin and Holga have no other choice but to break out of prison and save Edgin's daughter, Kira, from Forge. They of course have to get that magic relic to save Edgin's wife as well.

This movie is fun from start to finish. They have a ton of fun banter to keep the movie from becoming too serious but they don't go too over the top with the comedy either. In some ways it really reminds me of the original Ant-Man movie. Both movies are essentially heist movies with a rag tag group that don't take themselves too seriously. The difference is that this movie is like a medieval fantasy film and Ant-man is a superhero movie.

The sense of comradery and screen time of each of the characters is nice. Each character has enough tie to breathe and give us some vested interest in them. You can see how each of them are going to contribute to the story and yes it's a very predictable movie. Though the scenarios they get themselves in and out of are fairly refreshing with their own little twists.

Some of the characters seem quite familiar. Chris Pine plays Edgin but in reality it's much like his Captain Kirk portrayal he did in Star Trek. Hugh Grant who plays Forge is much like all of his recent movies where he plays bad guys. They're all fairly similar and still I fall for these portrayals because it fits into the movie quite nicely. In fact most of the actors in this movie feel like they've kind of been type casted if you've seen them in their previous movies.

Special effects are pretty well done. They all have a cartoony feel to them but that's kind of expected as the whole thing is based in some sort of medieval fantasy setting. It's quite fitting with the tone of the movie as it doesn't take itself that seriously in the first place.

I watched this movie in Screen-X and I thought this really allowed the movie to pop. The soundstage of the movie was pretty cool as well. You can really hear things fly by your head during action sequences. The colors of this movie really attracts the eyes. It's bright and colorful but very inviting. It's like watching a warm fire, you can't take your eyes off of it...

Overall, I really liked this movie. I felt that the laughs worked well in this movie and the pacing was right on. I had a bit of a lull in certain points but nothing to totally distract from the overall experience. I would definitely come back and check this movie out again. That's why I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It is something I will definitely buy in physical format when it comes out.
