My Review of "Buffaloed"

A story about an underdog con artist in Buffalo. Some of it seems very familiar but that's okay.

Buffaloed is a pretty fun movie with a lot of comedy splashed in. They try to add a few social messages throughout this movie much like other movies like The Other Guys and The Big Short. They even try to explain the social issues in details much like they do in these movies as well. The similarities differ in terms of the actual story though.

This movie starts out with the main character Peg as a little kid. She seems to idolize her father and he doesn't seem to be that great of a guy in the first place. There's nothing wrong with her but she's instilled into her head that she's meant for something bigger.

Her family isn't rich. They're just barely scraping by but they love each other and support each other. It's actually a pretty nice family but she wants more and I guess that's what really gets her into trouble. She's been getting into trouble ever since she was a kid.

She starts out with selling food for more money and continues to figure out new hustles throughout her life. You can already tell she's a really smart cookie and she gets accepted to a really good school. The problem is that the family doesn't really have much money so she goes into hustle overdrive. This gets her into trouble with the law.

Her ambition to become rich doesn't end when she goes to jail. Instead she's even more motivated because she learns from different criminals in jail. So once she gets out of prison her determination is high but her opportunities have diminished because she's an ex-convict.

She somehow discovers the world of debt collection. The world is exceptionally shady but like I said before, she doesn't have many opportunities because of the ex-con thing. With her fantastic skills as a con artist, she discovers that she's an amazing sales person. That's pretty much the skills that she needs as a debt collector.

It doesn't take long for her to realize that the people in debt collection are the worst kind of people. They try to screw her and because of this she realizes that she needs to create her own debt collection business. Obviously, the other debt collectors aren't going to have this because they're horrible people so there's war to be had.

There's a whole bunch of back and forth that continuously gets Peg into trouble and she doesn't seem to learn from it. Her greed for money eventually overtakes her ambitions. She does some seedy things as she slowly turns into the people that she never wants to turn into the first place.

There's a lot of social messaging about debt collection in the United States. They explain it pretty much the same way that they explain things in the movie The Big Short. It's a oversimplification of facts to help the viewers understand the situation. In their defense it is a very complicated subject to explain. I found that they didn't really have to explain anything though because their explanation doesn't come into play later on in the movie.

Still they wanted to give a message to the audience to say that debt collectors are seedy individuals because of the lack of regulations out there. They let us know why debt collection needs to be regulated. Sometimes people can't avoid debt and it's terrible to see that some of these debt collectors will take full advantage of these disadvantaged people for their own benefit.

I like that they added a lot of comedy throughout the movie that didn't seem out of place. Sometimes when there's serious movies like this they add comedy that doesn't really feel like it fits the tone of the movie. It's sometimes wacky when it really shouldn't be. This movie added some fun jokes that didn't make the movie feel like it's another movie.

Overall, this isn't necessarily a movie that I would normally go watch but I'm glad I tried it out. It was a really fun movie and I was surprised how entertaining it was. I think a lot of people will be surprised with it as well. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It might not seem like an interesting movie to some but I really think you should give it a try.
