My Review of "Blade"
This movie is a product of its time. I came in with rose colored glasses and I came out a little disappointed.

Blade is a superhero vampire movie that came out in 1998. I remember loving this movie when it first came out. With the new superhero movies coming out a lot of people brag about how superhero movies used to be. This is not a great example of one of those superhero movies. It's not terrible but I think people hype this movie more than it really should be.
The movie starts off with an incident at the hospital. This is basically the origin story of our title character Blade. His mother is in the hospital because of an assault. We would find out that this assault was actually a vampire assault. She was not able to survive but her son did and now he's basically a superhero out for vengeance.
His sole priority is to find the culprit that murdered his mother. During his fight for justice he's met with a new friend named Karen. She's a doctor that was attacked by vampires as well. It just so happens that she specializes in blood so if she gets bitten she can cure herself.
Their big bad guy is Deacon Frost. He's a big boss vampire trying to fulfil some sort of ancient vampire god prophecy. It so happens, he's not a pure blooded vampire as well. This gives him a bit of a chip on his shoulder because the other vampire crime bosses are pure vampire.
All of their stories will conveniently converge eventually. It's a fairly simple storyline and the cast does their best to bring some life to the characters. The problem is that there's a lot of weird logic thrown in with this movie. They're really hazy in terms of what happens to a person when a vampire bites them. It's explained a little but there's really no consistency in terms of who vampires bite.
They have this pretty cool concept of how the world isn't really the world we know it. It's actually got this mysterious vampire underground to it. This is probably how movies like John Wick got their lore. The backstory really resembles how John Wick plays out their world. In some ways, this movie is ahead of it's time because of this aspect. It comes out a year before the Matrix did their concept of the world really isn't the world that we know it schtick.
Then again a lot of movies at the time had this same type of concept. It's definitely a product of its time. The color grading feels the same as the Matrix and the music as well. Again this movie came out before the Matrix so maybe the Matrix pulled from this movie.
The action is a little dated. The choreographed fights look a little dated by today's standards. To add to injury, the special effects are totally outdated. Their CGI is atrocious to watch today but believe me, this was state of the art back when it came out. I was wowed by them back in the day. With the effects now, it just doesn't hit the same way.
I think a lot of people that hold this movie in high regard have very heavy nostalgia for it. It is quite dated. Everything about this movie feels out of date and not in a good way.
Overall, I was really hoping that I would be able to enjoy this movie as much as I did back in the day but my excitement quickly dwindled as I continued to watch. There are some redeeming qualities. Like I said this movie was ahead of its time when it came out. Unfortunately, as a movie it doesn't hold up. That's why I have to give this one a 6 out of 10.
