My Review of "Delicious in Dungeon: Season 1"

I wasn't sure what I was going to get with this anime. It turned out to be a great surprise.

Delicious in Dungeon: Season 1 is an anime exclusive to Netflix. I didn't know much about this show but it came highly recommended. Seeing as I'm not really into animes anymore, I was reluctant to check it out. That's why it took me so long to check it out. Luckily, I did because my opinions of anime shows are starting to really change over after the last few that I've reviewed.

This season starts out with a band of explorers. They're exploring a dungeon but they're really hungry. Due to their hunger they weren't paying attention to a gigantic red dragon. This dragon totally decimates them and even kills one of their members. Luckily with the last of her strength, their magician Marcille was able to save the surviving members.

Two members of the crew leave because of the lack of resources and ambition to go on. Now all we have are: Marcille, the magician, Laios, the leader of the gang and Chilchuck, the small navigator. The three of them are starved for food and have no place to go.

The dragon they battled earlier had eaten Falin. She happens to be Laios' sister and Marcille's best friend. Obviously she means a lot to them. In this dungeon, it's possible to revive an individual so long as their body is still intact. Dragon's are notorious to digest very slowly, so the gang plans on defeating the dragon to revive Falin. They have a limited time to do it so they have to dive right back into the dungeon with limited resources.

Their biggest hurdle is food. They were destroyed last time because of their hunger and they have no money. The gang decides that the best way to sustain their party is to eat the monsters that they find in the dungeon. It seems they'll do anything to help out Falin and decide to go ahead.

As they progress through the dungeon they meet a dwarf named Senshi. He has lived in the dungeon for years and he's surprised that someone else has started to eat the monsters in the dungeon. He makes quick friends with the group and they all band together to save Falin before she gets digested by the red dragon.

At first this show felt kind of weird. They did a lot of explanation of the monsters and cooking techniques that they encountered. I have played some role playing games back in the day so I did recognize some of the monsters. Some of the cooking techniques were also quite familiar to me. It was as if they were trying to meld some real life elements to this fantasy world. Surprisingly, it works. There's some fun in their antics.

Before long the characters started growing on me and then the whole dungeon lore got to me and they weaned away from the cooking aspect and focused more on the world and character building. At that point, I was completely hooked in and devouring the whole show.

It doesn't take too long because it's only 24 episodes at 30 minutes an episode. They will fly by real fast. I wasn't expecting to get into it as much as I did. A little bit of warning though. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which indicates that there will be a following season.

Overall, this was a very pleasant surprise. I was not only into it, I was totally obsessed with this show. There's not a lot of cartoons that can suck me in like this and this did it in fairly little time. I can't wait for the next season because it is a really fun ride. I have to give this season a 7.5 out of 10 only due to the somewhat awkward beginning.
