Kaos is a new show from Netflix that premiered on August 29, 2024. The show centers around the retelling of Greek mythology through a modern lens. The cast is led by the god Jeff Goldblum playing the character of Zeus, the king of the gods and ruler of Mount Olympus.
The main arc of the first season is the prophecy that is shared between Zeus, King Minos of Crete, Riddy, and Caeneus. However, it is not revealed until late in the season that they share the same prophecy.
What follows is a hilarious set of escapades as both the human and immortal characters navigate the complexities of a reality where the Fates guide the outcome of your life. Mixed in with the comedic wit of the cast are the dire consequences of when one attempts to hold on to a power that they have no control over.
The show is narrated by Prometheus, who Zeus often has pop in, from his imprisonment of having his liver eaten out by an eagle every day, to provide him with comfort and advice. Unfortunately for the world, Zeus often chooses to interpret Prometheus’s advice as he pleases, rather than how Prometheus originally intended.
The series follows the meandering storylines of Caeneus and Eurydice(Riddy), as they travel through the underworld as part of the Unresolved. In this role, they are employed in helping the dead that have been buried properly to pass through The Frame. But in between their work, they also investigate the realities of the Underworld. Through this, they discover the truth of the gods’ powers.
Meanwhile, on Crete, King Minos is struggling to maintain control after a group of rebels commit an act of blasphemy against the gods. Between trying to keep control of the Cretian populace, pleasing the gods (Zeus in particular), and keeping his worst secret from his wife and daughter, King Minos is a man just as much on the edge of collapse as Zeus.
And then there are the misadventures of Dionysus and Orpheus. These two team up when Dionysus discovers Orpheus's deep love for his wife, Riddy. After seeing this, Dionysus decides to help Orpheus cheat death and enter the Underworld in order for Orpheus to attempt to bring Riddy back from the dead. However, their plan gets compromised once Riddy learns more about the Underworld, and the truth of why she is unresolved.
And if none of that was enough, we get treated to the odd, yet mythologically accurate shenanigans that is the love triangle between Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon. The escapades between these three are as chaotic and funny as one can expect from a comedy based on Greek mythology.
This is all brought together through the last few episodes when we see how all their timelines converge to create the downfall of the gods, and trigger Kaos.
Ultimately, Kaos is one of the best new comedy series that Netflix has produced in the last few years and has a bit of something for everyone. Whether you're a fan of Greek mythology, or just looking for a new comedy to binge over the weekend, Kaos has a bit of everything for everyone. So, whether you’re looking for a quick watch, or something that has the potential to become a new comfort show, come join in the chaos that is Kaos.
