In A Land of Myth, and A Time Of Magic
By Skylar Miller
When I was younger I was playing on my computer while my mom watched TV. I wasn't really paying the TV much attention. At least I didn't think I was. I guess I was retaining what the characters were saying because the first episode ended with a cliffhanger and I remember asking my mom "Wait what did he want?".
I asked my mom what she was watching and she told me it was a show called Merlin. "It's about magic, dragons, princes, and princesses" she said. I was hooked. I went and found the first episode on demand and actually watched it this time.
From that day on I watch it every week. It became me and my moms show, and waiting in between seasons was torture for an 8 year old. It was probably torture for my mom too because it was all I would talk about.
The show started in 2008 and had 5 seasons. Since then I have rewatched the show on Netflix more times than I care to admit. The fantasy world, the comedy, the romance, and all the plot twist make it one of the shows you watch to escape your own reality.
Everyone already knows who Merlin, King Arthur, and Lancelot is whether they have seen the show or not. What they don't know they're missing is the way the TV changed parts of the original storyline. In the TV show Merlin and Prince Arthur well aren't quite friends in the beginning, but they very close.
Merlin in the TV show also isn't an old wizard. He is actually a young man who comes to Camelot to work for Gaius, and help understand his powers. Although, he ends up being the servant of Prince Arthur. It is his destiny to keep him safe so he can become King of Camelot, and return magic to the kingdom.
They mixed in the perfect amount of comedy and romance. Merlin and Arthur have a love/hate relationship and are always giving each other a hard time. While also including the forbidden love of the Prince and Morgana's maid Guinevere.
One of the coolest storylines within the show is that no one could know that Merlin could do magic other than Gaius. He spent day in day out working for Arthur. He did magic to help him clean Arthurs clothes and armor. Not to mention every time he used magic to save Arthurs life and never got credit for any of it! The fact he kept it a secret for so long was baffling
Of course there is the Morgana plot twist that I didn't see coming because when I first watched this show I didn't know much about the King Arthur and Merlin stories. Her being raised by a king who despised magic, and ended up having powers more powerful than she understood. When she finally understood she wanted to use to for revenge and power with no regards for who got hurt along the way.
I have a tendency to latch on to certain TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Criminal Minds etc. They all have over 10 seasons which is why I love binging them. I was so upset when I found out they were cancelling Merlin. There was so much potential left for the show.
I know I spoiled a lot of the show in this, but don't let that discourage you from watching it. There is so much more to this thrilling tale, and plot twists I promise you won't see coming! Now I think I am going to go rewatch it for the millionth time!
