The Rhode Hype: Worth the Obsession?

Last month, my sister travelled to the United States and my number one request was for her to bring me back some rhode. Being a beauty editor I should know better, but the marketing has me in a chokehold and for years I’ve been dying to get my hands on it (the scarcity effect is real). I’ve also tried the Glazing Milk and Mist (thanks to a very lucky PR package) and can’t deny they work. Glazed donut skin, indeed.

My sister came back with some Peptide Lip Shape liners, a Pocket Blush and the newly-launched eye patches. Of course I’ve tried them all since, and now with the news of the brand's Australian launch this February, have catalogued my thoughts so you can curate your own shopping list.

An honest review of the best rhode products, below.

Glazing Milk

This genuinely gives you instantly dewy skin. The formula is pretty thick for a milk or essence type product – it soaks in slightly but leaves a glassy film that does make your skin look very visibly moisturised. It’s also super versatile: you can use it alone, under moisturiser, or mix it into foundation for a Hailey Bieber-coded glazed finish. The only think I’ll say is that it’s probably not good for skin that easily congests or breaks out (there’s coconut alkelydes in the formula, a known pore-clogger). Otherwise, obsessed with it.

Glazing Mist

I was surprised by how much I liked this. Initially I thought maybe it was just the milk in mist form, but it’s less occlusive from an ingredients perspective. Again, it’s so versatile – if you prefer something light you can use it as a toner, to set makeup or just refresh during the day. I recently travelled long haul and also found it to be the hero of my in-flight makeup routine. It reminds me a lot of the Tatcha Dewy Skin Spray but longer-lasting.

Pocket Blush

I own 101 cream blush formulas so wasn’t sure I needed to own this but the Sleepy Girl lore had me sold (I also wanted Toasted Teddy but my sister told me it was sold out). It’s super small, but delivers on the promise of healthy flushed cheeks. Even by cream standards it’s very emollient. I actually found it great as a lip balm because it’s so creamy and nourishing. I'm probably going to buy more shades in February…

Peptide Lip Shape

Historically I am not a lip liner girl, and I don’t really vibe with the over-lined lip trend – it’s just not for me. But lately I’ve been dabbling – new year, new me? I made my sister pick me up two shades: Twist and Lunge. Twist is a soft pink, whereas Lunge is more of a cool taupe brown. The formulas feels halfway between a liner and a crayon. It’s soft with a rounded tip that gives you a surprisingly natural finish, pending you apply with a light hand. Dare I say I prefer it to an actual pencil liner? The twist up function is easy and the shades are sheer, plus the little shaper tool on the end is a smart detail. I love.

Peptide Lip Treatment

Rhode

I have the original Peptide Lip Treatment and it feels nice (no grainy issues over here). It’s hydrating and pretty long lasting for a balm, but as for hydration, I still prefer Lanolips or Necessaire. However if you want a glossy sheen, highly recommend.

Peptide Glazing Fluid

So I actually gave this to a Hailey Bieber-obsessed friend, but I did try it once and loved the way it plumped my skin. I feel it’s just a nice hydrating serum – less ‘slippery’ than the Glazing Milk. You could layer both of course but if I was choosing, I’d go for the milk.

Peptide Eye Prep

Straight off the bat I think these are more of a fun-to-have item. Eye patches as a category are about instant gratification and morale-boosting. They don’t do a whole lot long-term, but they do immediately hydrate and smooth out surface crinkles, while also helping to reduce puffiness. I will say that these look cute (a plus) and fit snugly so it feels as if they’re really hugging the eye contour. They definitely smooth and instil a feeling of alive-ness, as well. My advice is to keep them in the fridge for extra de-puffing.
