With the resurgence of the Hunger Games, before Netflix makes it less accessible I too decided to rewatch it. That said this article will center specifically on the movies and we are going to discuss Peeta vs Gale.
In the first film, Gale was simply the best friend who helped Katniss take care of her family. We focused so much on the games that they had little screen time together. However Katniss and Peeta had plenty of time together and they had to bond together in order to survive. We see them start to compliment each other really well. Katniss was the strength, Peeta was the sweet, likable side.
In the second film the conflict between Katniss and the two boys starts right away. Gale is immediately jealous of Peeta and Katniss’ fake romance. And he doesn’t really seem to care that it saved her life. Now of course Peeta and Katniss have to pretend to be madly in love in order to quell any rumblings of rebellion among the districts. Peeta is not super happy with the acting because he really does love her, but he is also doing what he has to do in order to survive. But as Peeta is the sweetest of boys he decides to push his feelings aside and be friends with her, because they went through hell together and she is the only person that gets him. Another point for Peeta is him deciding that they would donate their winnings to the families of the fallen tributes of district 11. This article will not be unbiased, you can not be team Gale without being a psychopath.
Katniss gets back to her district and reunites with Gale, and she asks him to run away with her and her family. And all he cares about is whether or not she loves him. She’s terrified and traumatized and he literally does not care. Gale literally tells her to do what she wants but he's gonna stay, once again proving that he doesn’t actually care about her. He’s angry and wants a fight and while that is understandable it in no way justified his actions.
Katniss asking Hamich to save Peeta if necessary shows that she actually cares about him, maybe we haven't quite grown to love yet but they very clearly care about each other.
When Johanna starts flirting with Peeta Katniss is visibly upset, possibly a little jealous. And the night before the games when she tells Peeta she doesn’t want to be allied with anyone else in the games, just him, it's adorable.
Peeta getting himself blasted to hell and scaring Katniss was probably the first moment we see her love for him. That kiss after Fennick saves him was very real.
Peeta giving Katniss the pearl he finds will make me cry everytime, it's so sweet and it's those little things that make them an adorable couple.
“If you die and I live, I’d have nothing. Nothing else that I care about” AND THEN HIS PENDENT WAS A LOCKET FOR HER CONTAINING PICTURES OF HER LOVED ONES. Peeta is the sweetest of boys and Katniss admits to needing him and they are for sure like for realsies actually in love now.
They get Katniss out of the games and we have to deal with Gale again…
When Katniss sees Peeta giving speeches from the capitol she is clearly concerned about him. Peeta is obviously being tortured and brainwashed and forced to say things in order to save himself and Katniss, and thus turns himself into public enemy #1. Without Peeta she doesn’t really have anyone to hold her and protect her when she wakes up from a nightmare. Because now she is back in a position where she needs to be the strong one, needs to be the protector.
She tries to find comfort in Gale, but they don’t have the closeness that she and Peeta have. Gale can’t handle her concern for Peeta, he has absolutely no sense. This is why I can’t stand the “but he’s traumatized” argument. Gale has been through absolutely nothing compared to Katniss and Peeta and yet they remained compassionate and strong. Gale was a weak ass bitch and he was the pinnacle of toxic masculinity.
“I’m in pain, that’s the only way I can get your attention” Hey bud there’s a revolution going on maybe there are more important things then your best friend loving someone else mkay. Gale is super freaking annoying.
“If they have to die I can live with that” Gale is the literal worst and Katniss calls him out on his bloodlust. Killing is always personal despite how Gale justifies it to himself.
The bombing was the last straw (for Katniss, the last straw for me was long before that), whether or not he knew the exact intention of the bomb he knew people were going to die. And he knew innocent people were going to die and there is no excuse for that.
Katniss ending up with Peeta was obvious and there is really only one team worth even talking about. I don’t believe anyone sane is actually team Gale but there are some questionable and stupid people out there so here we are.
