Emmy Nominations

2023

Emmy nominations are out! And though we are going to talk about them I want to go ahead and say that the Emmys have many categories that are all very important. All crew members, visual artists, music directors, costume designers and everyone else that makes TV magic happen should be recognized and rewarded for their hard work. However, so that this article is not 5,000 words long I am going to have to pair down what I cover. What I really want to do is take a different angle here and focus on the shows themselves, how many things they were nominated for and what I would like to see happen. There are quite a few shows that swept many nominations and as we get closer to the Emmys I will be watching the most popular entries and giving my thoughts.

Let's start with The Last of Us. I am going to be honest and say that this is one of the only shows on the list of nominations that I have seen. And I loved it so I am happy to see it on the list. The Last of Us was nominated for lots of awards, the main ones including; Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Pedro Pascal), Best Actress (Bella Ramsey), Best Writing and Best Directing among others. Now I can’t rightfully weigh in on who should win things as of yet, I need to watch some more of these series in order to give thoughtful predictions. So I will leave it at, I loved The Last of Us, I would watch it again and I think all of these nominations are rightfully earned.

The next series that swept quite a few nominations is White Lotus taking; Best Drama Series, 4 Best Supporting Actors, 5 Best Supporting Actresses, Best Writing and Best Directing. It's my understanding that White Lotus is more of an ensemble cast so the amount of Supporting nominations makes perfect sense and actually makes me very excited to watch the show.

With nearly as many main nominations we have Succession being nominated for Best Drama, 3 Best Actor, Best Actress, 4 Best Supporting Actors, Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing, and several Best Directing nominations. This was a show I was never really interested in but as a media journalist it is my job to report honestly so I promise to watch at least the first season before I make my predictions.

The best series that gathered quite a few nominations was Yellowjackets. Yellowjackets has been very popular on the internet as of late so it was on my to be watched list anyways, so seeing it nominated just made me more excited to see it. Yellowjackets was nominated for Best Drama Series, and Best Actress. Not as many nominations as our previous shows but since it seems to have a cult internet following any nominations is surprising and good.

Now let's tackle comedy series of which I’ve only seen 1 of them. Only Murders in This Building is fun, refreshing and has the best cast I can think up for anything so the fact that it's nominated for Best Comedy Series, Best Actor, and Best Writing is so great. I need to finish the series but the first season was so brilliant.

A widely beloved series that definitely got the recognition it deserved is Abbott Elementary. The hilarious series was nominated for Best Comedy Series, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and 2 Best Supporting Actress nominations. I have seen bits and pieces of this series and it is very funny. The writing is witty and brilliant and I love to see it continue to get awarded.

The Bear is another internet favorite nominated for Best Comedy, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing and Best Directing. This will have to be my first to watch because I love seeing why the internet gravitates towards particular projects. But I have only heard good things about this series so I can’t wait to see it.

Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also snagged nominations for Best Comedy Series, and Best Directing Ms. Maisel takes a Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and Ted Lasso for Best Actor, 2 Best Supporting Actors, 2 Best Actresses, and Best Writing. Both have been on my watchlist for far too long and this is my final push into actually watching them. Stay tuned for my live watches of all of these shows.

The last thing I want to say is that the very distasteful and wildly problematic Dahmer series was nominated for 2 Emmy’s and its very existence is a problem. Yet Love and Death, a very accurate adaptation of a real event that didn’t trigger anyone, was left off of the nominations list. Elizabeth Olsen was easily the biggest snub of the nominations, her very scarce colleague Jesse Plemons managed to get a nomination when Lizzie gave a haunting, intense and terrifying performance and was ignored. I will continue to be bitter about this if any of the Dahmer nominations win, or Plemons, his performance was child’s play next to hers.

Anyway, I can’t wait to experience all of these lovely nominated shows, most for the first time. And share my thoughts and predictions with you guys.
