Emma Watson still ‘treasures’ Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling despite trans stance
Hermione Granger Star on Supporting Trans Rights

Emma Watson has opened up about her strained relationship with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, saying she still “values” her memories with the writer despite their differing views on transgender issues.
Rowling has faced backlash since 2020 after posting tweets and an essay that many criticised as transphobic. At the time, Watson voiced her support for the transgender community.
Watson, who played Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter films, was recently asked to comment on Rowling’s previous remarks that she could “never forgive” the actress for having a different view.
“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love, support, and views that I have means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said in a guest appearance on the On Purpose podcast.
Watson further explained that she is “open” to having a dialogue with Rowling and that she hopes people will understand that she can still hold “love” for the people who don’t share the same values as her.
“I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish. I think it’s my deepest wish that people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” the actress stated.
Watson, who last appeared in Greta Gerwig ‘s Little Women, is currently on an acting break for six years now.

Watson’s reflections highlight the complexity of navigating public disagreements with people who have had a profound personal influence. Her choice of words suggests she doesn’t want her relationship with Rowling to be defined solely by their differing stances on gender identity issues. Instead, she appears to be carving out a middle ground—acknowledging her disappointment while preserving the affection tied to their shared history on Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter series remains one of the most successful franchises in modern cinema, and Watson’s portrayal of Hermione Granger was central to its global success. Her bond with Rowling, built during those years, continues to carry weight in her personal reflections. However, as both women have become outspoken on social issues, their paths have diverged, with Watson aligning herself firmly with trans rights and inclusivity.
Watson’s comments also underline the growing pressure public figures face when their views or alliances appear to conflict with their values. By emphasizing her ability to love and respect someone despite ideological differences, she is offering a perspective that contrasts with the polarized nature of most online debates. This approach has resonated with many of her fans, who see her as a voice of empathy in a climate often dominated by hostility.
J.K. Rowling’s remarks on transgender issues continue to divide audiences. For some, her defense of sex-based rights is seen as an important feminist stance; for others, it is a harmful dismissal of trans identities. Watson’s position reflects an attempt to hold compassion for both her former collaborator and the communities Rowling has alienated. This balancing act highlights the broader cultural struggle of reconciling personal loyalties with public advocacy.
The actress has been largely absent from Hollywood since 2019, choosing instead to focus on personal growth and causes close to her heart, including women’s rights and sustainability initiatives. While her break from acting has led to speculation about a permanent retirement, Watson has never ruled out returning. Her continued presence in public discussions—whether about politics, gender issues, or cultural touchstones like Harry Potter—ensures that she remains a relevant figure even outside the film industry.
For many fans of the Harry Potter franchise, the rift between Watson and Rowling is emblematic of a larger generational shift. Younger stars like Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint have all voiced solidarity with the transgender community, distancing themselves from Rowling’s controversial statements. Their decisions suggest a new cultural reality in which actors are not only performers but also role models who use their platforms to shape public opinion.
