The Birth of a Hero.

The year is 2100. It's dark, quiet. Space can be a lonely space sometimes, but not for Alexander Adams, he much prefers to spend time alone. So when NASA had told him that they had a mission for him, and only him, he jumped at the chance. He had wanted to be an astronaut his entire life, ever since he was young. All the other kids would play outside, feel the breeze against their face, get bumps and bruises, but not Alex. He would stay at home and research everything he could about the great beyond, hoping that one day he would be up there. And here he is now, in a one man space shuttle, in the vacuum of space all by himself. His very own paradise. The mission he was sent out to do involves him landing on an asteroid heading to Earth to gather some samples of the rock for examination, it sounds simple, but the asteroid is close, so he needs to be fast. As he nears the asteroid, he takes a look around at the stars. All of them glistening, all of them a king of their very own solar system and although they're all millions of light years from him, he feels closer to them than ever. "The universe is a beautiful creation." He merely whispers to himself as he stares in awe at what lays in front of his eyes.

"No one has created this, son. You of all people should know that." Replies Administrator Johnson down the headset of Alex.

"Just a figure of speech sir." Alex assures him. "I'm closing in on the asteroid now, I should be able to land in around five minutes."

"Good luck Adams, be careful out there."

"I will sir, thankyou."

Alex lands the shuttle on the empty rock which great precision, it's no surprise he was chosen for this mission. He steps out for no longer than five minutes, gathers what he needs and makes his way back onto the ship. "Got it sir, I'll be back with you soon." He steps back inside the shuttle and sets the course for home.

"Adams log, 23rd February 2100. I never thought I would be spending my birthday up here but here I am, I wouldn't have it any other way, not like I would be spending it with anyone back home anyway. When my mother was alive she would often say to me 'Alex, you don't ne-" The engine of the shuttle exploded, he drops his voice recorder on the floor and it smashes, he falls out of his seat and the shuttle begins to travel off course. The shuttles alarms begin to blare a deafening noise as the lights begin to fluoresce a bright red. In a panic, Alexander tries to get in contact with NASA, "Hello is anybody there? You need to answer!" No one is on the other end. "God damn it answer me!" His face begins to glow red with anger and fear, never a good combination. He then feels the shuttle getting pulled away by a powerful force. "Oh shit." He realises what is happening, the shuttle is being pulled in by a black hole. Finally somebody responds, "Hello this is Administrator Johnson is everything okay?"

"Sir, my shuttle engine has exploded and I'm now being pulled into what I believe is a black hole, what can I do." There's a pause on the other end. "Sir! Answer me!."

"There isn't a whole lot you can do, son." Johnson sincerely replies. "I'm sorry." Alex doesn't say anything, fear has overcome his ability to speak, his skin turns a pale white, he takes off his headset and drops it on the floor. "Adams?" Questions Johnson. "Adams are you there?" Still nothing. "For fuck sake Adams answer me!" As he screams down the headset, Alex is staring directly into the black hole, there is nothing but darkness, all the light as been absorbed by this giant. Alex closes his eyes and his ship flies into the hole.

Back at NASA, Johnson is sat staring at the wall in disbelief, "I failed him." A single tear falls down his cheek.

"Sir?"

"Holy shit... Adams?" In front of him is floating, glowing white figure with eyes of black. It is Alexander Adams.
