Dan Da Dan Confirms It's the Highest-Quality Anime of the Season

Highest-Quality, I repeat Highest-Quality.

Because of its narrative, which skillfully combines romance and strong action—a balance that other shōnen series struggle to maintain—Dan Da Dan by Science Saru is quickly becoming the most popular anime series of 2024. Although this characteristic already distinguishes anime, the animation's excellence is what has really captured the attention of anime fans. Even if Science Saru had a stellar record, Dan Da Dan is going above and beyond.

The most notable feature of Dan Da Dan is the anime's deft use of color, which gives each significant event a unique feel. But this animation selection isn't made at random or to establish the mood of the scene; rather, distinctive color schemes are employed to evoke strong feelings in the characters, particularly the antagonists on screen. The director recently stated in an interview that this color scheme adds a profound element to the visual storytelling and represents a deeper philosophical relationship.

Dan Da Is Not Casual at All The Visual Representation of Dan's Villains

According to Anime Corner's recent interview with Fuga Yamashiro, the director of Dan Da Dan, every antagonist in the series has a distinct color scheme. The interview enhances the visual storytelling by highlighting different color schemes utilized for the ghosts/spirits and alien creatures. The aliens are depicted with a cooler color scheme because of their alien isolation from humanity and their enigmatic life. The aliens are depicted using 3D computer-generated imagery (CGI), which adds to their mysterious aura and demonstrates the studio's clever usage of the most contentious aspect of anime production.

The ghosts' color scheme, on the other hand, tends toward warm hues, signifying their kinship with humans. This selection echoes the idea of Jujutsu Kaisen, which holds that curses are the result of human deeds. For example, the Serpo aliens are characterized by bright blue tones, whereas Turbo Granny's presence is symbolized by darker reds. The color themes are significantly influenced by dominating characters, as demonstrated by Turbo Granny, who visually overshadows even the Serpo aliens. Although ghosts and aliens have different themes, Okarun and Momo both have distinctive hues that could have deeper significance in the narrative.

Momo and Okarun Use Colors That Contrary to Their Views

In the first episode, Okarun's believing in aliens and Momo's strong belief in ghosts are playfully contrasted, with both rejecting the other's beliefs. Because of this dynamic, they embark on a journey in which they try to refute one another's views only to run into exactly what the other believes in, which ultimately leads them to realize their own abilities. These interactions activate Momo's mysterious psychic powers, represented by cyan/teal colors, while Okarun, after being possessed, adopts Turbo Granny's darker theme. This demonstrates how each character acquires abilities that go against their initial convictions.

These hues may signify a mutual acceptance of one another's opinions, even though they also appropriately reflect the powers they are given. This difference may support the idea that opposites attract as Dan Da Dan strengthens Momo and Okarun's relationship. Dan Da Dan is proving to be one of the best anime of the season, if not the year, thanks to its significant color choices, which highlight the meticulous attention to detail that goes into its production.
