Introduction

This is a short fiction piece using a line from their "First Line Prompts" resource that you can read here:

Wait

The sound of a door creaking open sent shivers down my spine...

... were his thoughts and feelings as he waited, as he had been doing for days, but was so scared about what he thought was going to happen.

He had been told to wait here to make payment.

What for he didn't know, he didn't even know what the payment was going to be.

He had been told if he didn't do it, his family and friends would suffer. He personally was not threatened. You will always do more to protect the ones you love than you will to protect yourself.

Then his children told him they had seen a scary dark man waiting outside the school. No one else had seen the man. They said he had no face and there were eyes on his arms. His hands were talons.

This got him worried so he came and waited.

His family didn't know where he was and reported him missing to the police, but he would not be found in this hidden place.

The door fully opened and the dark man with no face, eyes on his arms and talons for hands stood before him.

His children had described this horror perfectly.

A voice said

"I have come for your soul, and after this, we will take your family because you will no longer be there to protect them. You made it easy for us"

He was in shock, but before he could move the talon pierced his chest and drew out his life force.

He died knowing that this was going to happen to every member of his family and he was certain that it was his fault.

The creature left with his soul and left an empty body bloodied on the floor ....
