From A Vocal Prompt

Introduction
I have taken the prompt from this Vocal list piece:
The prompt is
Write a story about a character who is trapped in a nightmare.
The music is "Nightmare" by Brainbug
W@ke
The surgeon told me to count backwards from ten, I think I got to eight but I am now fully awake in this place, the up is down and the left is right and when I move it hurts.
There are shadows with eyes and disembodied hands that run around like spiders, but there is no floor or ceiling, and there is no sky, I am floating expecting to fall.
Am I being operated on, are they cutting into me, I don't know, I want to wake but if I wake will it me mid-operation?
I am frightened and hurting, I was supposed to be sleeping but this is not sleep, this is hell. Are the things I see a threat? Those shadows with eyes are just wrong. They watch but do not move, they watch the scurrying hand.
There are sounds like ratchety chains, on a sinking ship.
Although I can move I don't know where I am going and this place has no form or structure.
Did the operation go wrong?
Am I dead?
I can still see and think, but I am frightened, I am so frightened.
I want to wake up, but I am stuck in this hellish dream and I don't know how to get out.
I am not calm, at all.
I scream but the sound disappears ito the hellish blackness here.
I think I am stuck but pray that I will wake soon.

Makes me appreciate the fact that I rarely remember my dreams. Nightmarish indeed, Mike.
I have tried several items to get past 8 in the dreaded operation countdown. My mother, who is 92, had to have a hip replacement because of a fall, and for other reasons, they were not confident of doing it under a general, so the whole thing was done under local and twilight sedation. Not for me!!!
Oh my, that's such a terrifying situation to be in. Loved your story!
Oh goodness. This is the worst nightmare ever. Love the line about disembodied hands scurrying like spiders.
Okay - that was terrifying. Nice work.
I believe this does happen when people have surgery and some say they have good dreams and some like the story you just wrote. Good job.
This is a sleep paralysis moment!
This is very similar to the sleep paralysis scenario!
scary I woke up on the operating table once. It wasn't very fun at all.
