Twilight Calling

A Place Of Dreams

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published about a year ago • 3 min read

He had been told to pursue his dream, and to find it he would have to journey far. He was given instructions and set out for the place beyond the wild woods, where he would find a small house.

The one who lived there would tell him the secret of how to find his dream.

For three days he crossed the woods, eventually coming out on a stony plain where he saw the house.

He got to the house and was wondering why there was no glass in the windows. The door was open.

He went inside and shouted "Hello" but no one answered. He checked each room and upstairs and there was no sign of anyone around.

He went into the kitchen which was well stocked and also had a water pump, and next to it several leather drinking flasks. There were also rucksacks and food as well, so although there was no one here, it felt more like a supply post rather than a home.

On the table was a card. It said:

"You will find your dreams in the twilight. Fill a flask with water and a sack with food and that will sustain you until you find your dreams"

He looked out the door and he saw the twilight, like a mist on the horizon.

With flask and sack filled, he started off over the plain towards the twilight. He felt lonely as he walked. The house and the wood faded into nothing but the twilight seemed no closer.

The twilight stayed as it was on the horizon, although the night came down as well, but the twilight stayed the same.

He drank and ate and wondered how long the food and water would last. Then he lay on the ground and slept.

When he woke it was light, he checked his flask and rucksack and they were full. Was this magic? Was this part of his dream?

He ate and drank, and then continued toward the mist of twilight. It was calling him.

He was getting no closer to the twilight but further away from the house, the wild woods and his home.

He felt there was something wrong but he did not want to give up on his dreams. That was not an option. He would find his dreams in the Twilight.

He had followed all instructions to the letter and the ones who had sent him on the trail did not expect to see him return. He didn't know that, he thought he would return to fanfare and congratulations.

He was told that the food and drink would last him until he found his dreams, but as they replenished every day, it looked like his dreams would never be found, but he kept on going, there was no one but himself to tell him it was a futile exercise.

He lost count of how long he had been away and had seen not one person or creature since he entered the woods.

Then one day he woke and he was in a white cold mist, the Twilight had come to him. He checked his flask and food, they had not been replenished. He must have found his dreams but he did not know what they were, and then he saw a figure in the swirling mist. It beckoned and he passed out.

He woke in his bed in shock, that was the weirdest dream.

He checked his phone, there were two messages:

The first was about the job he had applied for. It was an offer with a huge salary and benefits package, a dream come true.

The second was a text from a girl he was struck one. He invited her for a meal two weeks ago and thought she wasn't interested. Her email gushed that it was her favourite restaurant and she couldn't wait to eat out with him.

So was it just a dream or did he really make that journey?

The only thing for certain was that he had found his dreams.
