Starting Over Part 2. Content Warning.
Be advised, this piece includes some graphic descriptions of abuse. Ella has lived in this small town for 5 years now. In those 5 years she made 2 friends. Charlie was the one neighbor to greet her and bring her a pie on the day she moved in. Ella nearly cried at the gesture, she thought it was so sweet and neighborly. Charlie was the one and only friend she had until their partner beat them to death. At Charlie's funeral, Ella met David. David and Charlie were childhood friends; he had just moved back into town the day before Charlie died. He hadn't even gotten to see Charlie before their death. He was devastated and often sought out Ella for a shoulder to cry on. They quickly became best friends in the months following Charlie's death. Ella could see herself settling down with David; it would be so easy. But ever since Ella was in middle school, she knew she was a lesbian. David figured, but still tried to give it a shot and kiss her one night anyway after too many vodka cranberries.

FEBRUARY - 1963
February -, 1963 My dearest Meg, I know you’re wondering why I didn’t date this letter. There’s a good reason for that I’m hoping you’ll be reading this by Valentine’s Day but knowing how slow the mail moves around here, there’s no way to be sure. I wish I was there to take you to a fancy restaurant, buy you a box of chocolates, and a very large bouquet of red roses. My, wonderful, darling, Meg, I miss you so much.

The race against time
A nostalgic wave hits me as I glance down at the book clutched tightly in my grasp… ‘A Wrinkle in Time’. A kaleidoscope of colour swirls dizzily around me… or am I spinning inside a massive paint pot of rainbow hues? Magenta mixes with turquoise and liquid gold. Each strand of coloured ‘thread’ unspooling… playfully looping around its neighbour, winding around me. The vertiginous sight is startling and exhilarating. Tingling ‘pins and needles’ prick my extremities… fingers and toes twitch. Tinkling notes of a glockenspiel gently dance around me… a joyous anthem, unknown but somehow familiar.

Christopher
Christopher turned off the computer at his desk and began to get ready to leave work. He’d been employed by the insurance company for 12 years and the routine had become something he did nearly unconsciously. As he went through the revolving front door, the wind seemed to pick up just to inconvenience him. It had snowed and there were few footprints on the walk. Makes sense, he thought. Very few people would be leaving the office this early.
