Perfect From Afar. Runner-Up in Everything Looks Better From Far Away Challenge.
“Let’s just try it,” Mark said, looking again at the old car up ahead. ‘Old’ and ‘car’ didn’t quite capture the wreck of it. A 1940’s Chevy 2 door, the kind of hotrod you saw in surf movies twenty years after and sixty years ago. This one even had 2 surfboards on the roof, fins up, like a fancy haircut. Time and the sun, salt and humidity, had not been kind. Technically a car was for moving; this one had served as a billboard for the Crayfish Diner until it closed.

Night Thing. Honorable Mention in The Shape of the Thing Challenge.
Chasing the light; ventured too far into the night. Thump-thump, each foot landing heavy. Thump-thump, each heart beat tight in my chest. Keep running, go faster; ravenous teeth right behind, taloned shadows reaching closer to slice and shred. Screaming wind and choking dark: eager, awaiting to pull me apart. Right foot, left foot, one more, one more! Can’t see, keep going, don’t fall down….” “Mommy!”

This Needs to Stop
With friendships, how do we really know what the other person is thinking? I might believe someone is my best friend, and later find out from others they were simply tolerating me, perhaps disliking pretty much everything about me. Sometimes, I had that suspicion about Gary, especially after he suddenly ditched me in high school.

Herbert
A hulking figure stood in the doorway. He smelled like whiskey and clenched a cigar between his teeth. It had a cherry scent adding a pleasant smell to an otherwise horrible one. Brad and Wendy turn and their faces twist in horror. Herbert revs his chain saw; then he lets out a terrifying squeal while chasing after the couple. Wendy bashes the clown over the head. Glass shatters and candy goes everywhere. Herbert shakes his head. Brad drives his shoulder into Herbert’s belly. The clown lets out a grunt as he staggers backwards and crashes through the coffee table. The terrified couple tries fleeing out the back door.

Honor
All he had in his life was honor. In the corner of his small bedchamber, a smoldering ancestral votive with notes of incense, jasmine, and wildflower fought the stench of the world beyond. It was a futile effort. Moonlight reflected off his sword reverently held between two wooden pedestals. It was his father’s blade, cooled with honor by blood of the Emperor’s enemies.

Echo of a Nightmare
Gabrielle found herself in a dimly lit hallway, where the floorboards screeched underneath her feet and the people in the pictures that hung on the wall glared at her maliciously. She had a vague recollection of why she was here and how she got here, but her end goal was fuzzy to her. Gabrielle gulped as she kept on walking down the hallway, towards an end she could not see. The lights above her flickered dangerously as she hunched towards herself in an attempt to make herself smaller.

Returning
He had decided today would be the last day of summer, in every sense. Literally, as July twenty-nineth was as good as any other day to declare the season over, but also figuratively summer was over for his life, being sixty, his birthday only two months before, if he calculated the calendar correctly twenty years ago. Life comes in seasons, he’s heard, and fate is insistent that autumn should arrive; a season of change, of harvesting, of preparation, of accepting the winter soon to come.
