“Let’s just try it,” Mark said, looking again at the old car up ahead. ‘Old’ and ‘car’ didn’t quite capture the wreck of it. A 1940’s Chevy 2 door, the kind of hotrod you saw in surf movies twenty years after and sixty years ago. This one even had 2 surfboards on the roof, fins up, like a fancy haircut. Time and the sun, salt and humidity, had not been kind. Technically a car was for moving; this one had served as a billboard for the Crayfish Diner until it closed.

The Last Summer
That was the year, of course, that broke all the records. Again. The last school bus circled for the third time, the last horn blasts louder, the last cheering echoes from its sealed up windows happier, the last withered waves from her colleagues and peers, even a few administrators, fiercer. This tradition of the school busses circling the parking lot a few times on the last day before summer was one of Miss Lindsey’s more appreciated events, so she held off returning to her classroom. Another of her more appreciated experiences as a teacher was a classroom empty of children, none more keenly relished than an emptiness ten weeks long.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. As they waited in the barren hall of the station, Papi put his hand on Evan’s shoulder. Despite Evan’s age they were nearly the same height. “Different from last time, hmm?” his grandfather said.
