We don't know where they came from or exactly when. Sometime in the last couple of weeks most likely.

Thing is, the ocean is almost as unexplored as space. Some thought they've been hiding right here all this time. Weird we've never seen any evidence of them, though, right? That's why others believe conspiracy theory that they arrived, in secret, from outer space. From a far flung ocean planet. Chance would have it, so they believe, that our own sea is a decent immitation. Close enough anyway.

I scoffed at the idea at first. I noticed there seemed to be a lot of them about, sure, but that happens doesn't it? Something popularises a breed of dog, and they're everywhere. Everyone wants one. It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean an alien invasion. That's preposperous. Can you imagine if dalmations were actually aliens? Actually That's plausible.

Anyway. Moving on.

It was a nice day at the beach. Quiet. No crowds. Usually There would be a few dogwalkers at this time of year. Middle of winter, see. Off peak.

Not today.

Then I saw him. Charging out of the waves on those stubby little legs. He caught my eye because my cousin has a dog just like him. A wirehaired one. Same colour. Same funny little ears.At first I thought for sure I'd see his owner around somewhere. He got closer, and clear of the spray. I shaded my eyes with one hand to see better. That helped.

The horn sprouting from its head looked ridiculous, and I almost burst out laughing. It turned and made a beeline for me. It was a bit menacing to be honest, pointing at me like that.

I backed away, and it pricked up it ears, picking up speed.

People say dogs can smell fear. These things are like dogs...

It's closing in!

There was a large chunk of driftwood just to my night. I grabbed it and held it out in front of me protectively.

Just in time!

The little beast launched at me, those teeth on show.

I swear to you, its jaws whirred! Bits of wood went flying, and in no time, my bit of wood was chewed down to a useless stump. I flung it at that fluffy head, and it bounced off, having apparently made no impact. Iran. The sand wasn't good for running, and twice I felt its warm breath on the back of my calves.

The next piece I grabbed was huge, but it offered no more than a few extra seconds. Up close his teeth looked razor sharp, and slightly too long for his mouth. He gave off a wet dog stink.

One of the "conspiracy nuts" shot him with a dart gun and that's how I got away to do what anyone does when they're thrust into a living nightmare: make a video in my car and post it on tiktok.
