The knocking at the front door persisted through the next minute or two. Josie trotted into the kitchen, which was situated toward the far end of the apartment where she lived alone with her mum. Her mum was standing next to the sink, her eyes fixed on the back yard which overlooked the forest area which encroached upon many of the buildings within the small village of Stumpton. It provided her with a warm sense of calmness, a type of natural visual serenity, one which Josie's mum regularly found solace in when the need arose for her.

The Silver Raven Chronicles Part One: Devil's Night
There was no moon, and the flickering lights of Old Kintargo did little to hold the night at bay. Smoky street lamps leaked tallow tears, revealing barely more than a few steps in any direction before the darkness and the thick night fog closed in once more. Ships swayed in the currents of the Yolubilis River; bulky shapes looming out of the mist like mountains in a dream. Dark figures paced the decks, illumined by the storm lanterns, their heavy coats and high collars making them look like phantoms in the cold night air.

There were many aspects of being a soldier that Jistan had never considered. When people told tales of war, they usually stuck to the grand scope of battles. Casualty numbers, major wins and losses, turning points. Both storytellers and history books neglected the little details, like boring night watch, even more boring food selection, or the hundreds of minor infractions committed by otherwise good soldiers.

PROLOGUE So, the world ended. Well, maybe that’s being a little overly dramatic, but it isn’t far from the truth. It started almost a year ago, within the heart of the Arctic Circle. No one noticed at first. Seeing as the Arctic Ocean is always covered by ice to some extent, no one thought much of it when the ice coverage began to spread; that is, until it began to spread quite rapidly and scientists observed a dramatic temperature drop, which continued to decrease at a steady pace. Greenland was the first to go, soon completely swallowed by the fast-moving ice. They had no warning. All life – human, animal and plant – was obliterated by the freezing conditions. After that, word was quickly spread to all countries bordering the Arctic Circle. For East Canada, it was also too late. That was where my home used to be.

Theoracism
The Wilmington, Delaware courtroom was empty save for Gadot, Myson, Vala, and all their lawyers. Moore’s recommendation, Torrance Skilling, was with Gadot’s family lawyer, Trent Gull. Vala had representation from Cooney’s lawyers, including Maxwell Garvey, Tina Soisson, and Nella Dern. The two students may have been outnumbered, but the firepower from their two attorneys would suffice.
