Photo Booth
Mom called twice tonight. She says she’s losing her memory and when I ask what she may be forgetting or how she knows it’s happening, she deflects. “Tell me what you’ve been drawing lately,” she’ll ask instead. This time when she asks, I lazily make my way across the room to my sketch pad; the page it’s opened to is an unfinished landscape of dark greens and bright blues. I swipe my fingers across the smooth page and admire it for a moment. I’d forgotten about this one for quite some time – when I happened upon it this morning, I figured I ought to finally finish what I’d started. I describe the large pines against the sunny sky to Mom, “and there are mountains way off in the distance. They’re so far away, they look more like hills.” She compliments my creativity, though she’s never seen the drawing. She mentions how I drew nothing but clouds when I was a teenager and she’s glad I worked out of that phase in my 20s. I thank her as I internally diminish the praise as if it bears no weight, simply because it came from my own mother.

“What is it?” “What the hell does it look like, Frank? It’s a paper bag.” My brother winced and I bit back a sigh. Almost nineteen and still couldn’t take someone being short with him. Thanks for leaving me with a brother with a slinky for a spine, Mom and Dad, I groused and instantly regretted it. It had been rough since our folks died and I was a major part of that; the unexpected transition back into civilian life didn’t sit too well with me and Frank often took the brunt of my resent-filled tantrums. Last year had been the worst with him losing a leg in a fight I started. Since then, I’d done my best to be a better man, a better brother. I did okay but still had a ways to go.

I know your secret
For as long as Irma could remember, she had lied about her age. When she was 20, she told people she was 15, and at 30 told people she was 22. It was lucky for her that she had always looked young, but as she approached 50, time started to catch up with her in the form of wrinkles, sunspots, and lines around her lips and eyes. She cursed her younger self for not caring so much about skincare and thinking she would always look young, naturally. But no longer could she pretend she was so much younger than she was. People would be able to tell, and then they’d call the Council. In the Land of Wraith, people weren’t allowed to live past 50, and those who tried to outlive their predetermined time of death would be hunted and killed. Irma didn’t want to die. She had a ten-year-old son and a twelve-year-old daughter. She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving them alone. It was unnatural, but that was what the Council mandated, and they had plenty willing to enforce it. So, Irma lied.

A Mysterious Box
After getting out of his mom’s car, Andy quickly dashed over to the swing where the three other kids were playing. Nathan, swinging on the swing set, was a year older than Andy at eleven years old. He had short brown hair and wore a plain blue t-shirt and black shorts with two thin white stripes on each side. Tiffany, age eleven was pushing Nathan, her younger brother. She had shoulder length blonde hair that was tied to each side in two braids on either side. She wore a teal-colored tank-top and blue jeans that were very new. And Zach had dark-brown skin and no hair, Zach was a recovering cancer patient. His hair would grow back soon, but not yet. He wore a red shirt with black letters that said ‘I SURVIVED’ on the front. He had black shorts. Andy wore a medium green colored shirt with blue jean shorts and had thin red hair. He also wore glasses.
