The Monsters Within. Top Story - October 2023.
There are monsters under the city, says Corina's dead mother’s voice, a ghost of an echo that seeps into her mind across time and memory. These words, brimming with portent, have coalesced into reality, made flesh in the form of a homeless man now sitting across from Corina on the subway, somewhere in the underbelly of Lower Manhattan.

Our Heart of Glass
With his head resting on my shoulder, I pictured the solid heart of glass that sat quiet and perfect somewhere inside my carry-on luggage. Outside the airplane window, the sunset was exploding slowly into orange and red fingers of light that spilt into the darkening blue sky serpentine, glowing. They looked like the tendrils of color inside the glass heart, curling around each other like a double helix rainbow.

Cody the Coyote
No one in Sedona knew that Shina, the old shopkeeper of Moonlight Crystals and only daughter of the last shaman of her faraway tribe, had befriended a mysterious coyote. Shina had named him Cody the coyote and although she seemed to know everything about Cody—his favorite foods, his hiding spots, and his moods, she was unaware of one crucial fact: Cody could speak.

Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Tonight their movement seemed slower, more somber, as if the thoughts of the powerful men that made them purple in the first place were finally settling on this particular shade of deep lilac.
